Ice Cream With a Side of Bacon

To have some fun this summer season, Smucker's sundae specialist, Sarah Palter suggests putting a twist on a traditional sundae. While bacon is most often paired with eggs and toast, Canadian chefs are now taking this savoury treat off the breakfast plate and adding it to popular desserts. Bacon sundaes might sound a little different, but the sweet and savoury blend of candied bacon, maple ice cream and caramel syrup melts perfectly in the mouth and is sure to please any palette. Directions

  1. To candy the bacon, combine bacon and brown sugar in small bowl, making sure that sugar evenly coats both sides of bacon. Place on barbecue grill over medium heat and grill 3–4 minutes per side or until crispy and golden brown. Cool.
  2. Once complete, combine syrup, crumbled bacon and sea salt in small bowl. Set aside. Meanwhile, place ice cream in serving dish. Drizzle with caramel bacon mixture. Garnish with additional bacon and caramel syrup if needed.
  3. Tip: To cook bacon in the oven, preheat broiler to high. Line a 10” x 15” (23cm x 38cm) rimmed baking sheet or broiler pan with foil. Place rack in pan. Lay sugar coated bacon strips on rack. Broil, 4–5 minutes on high, turn and continue broiling approximately 3 minutes longer or until browned. Remove and cool.
