Hush Puppies

Ingredients

• 1  cup cornmeal
• 1⁄2 cup flour
• 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
• 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking powder
• 3⁄4 cup buttermilk
• 2  tablespoons  hot melted shortening
• 2  tablespoons onions, grated

Directions

1. Mix all ingredients together. Drop by tablespoonfuls into hot fat. (Use enough fat to cover half of each portion of batter.) Brown on one side; turn, brown. Serve as bread with fried fish. Yield and cook times are approximate.
