Funny Cake

The funny thing is; the topping you mix and pour as the topping, actually ends up at the bottom of the pie as a crust. A recipe from my Nana. She stresses you have to use a "deep dish pie plate" as well as bake on the bottom rack of the stove.

• Yields: 1 deep dish pie plate

Ingredients

• 1⁄4 cup shortening
• 1  cup sugar
• 1  egg
• 1 1⁄4 cups flour
• 1  teaspoon baking powder
• 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
• 1⁄2 cup  whole milk
• 1  teaspoon vanilla

• topping

• 1⁄2 cup sugar
• 3⁄4 cup hot water
• 1⁄4 cup  cocoa
• 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla

Directions

1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees.
2. Mix the first 8 ingredients, pour into a deep dish pie plate; must be"deep dished".
3. Mix the 4 ingredients for the topping; pour over top of the mixture in pie dish.
4. Bake at 350 degrees, for 35 to 45 minutes on bottom rack of oven.
5. *Thetopping should now be the at the bottom of the dish.
