Fran's Stewed Red Cabbage

Ingredients
- 1 red cabbage (about 2 lbs.)
- 2 cups water
- salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
- 1⁄4 cup white vinegar
- 1⁄2 apple, diced
- 2 -3 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon sugar
to thicken
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 1⁄2 tablespoons flour
- salt and pepper
Directions
- wash and cut the core from the cabbage.
- coarsely shred and put in a dutch oven.
- add the water and salt to taste.
- bring water to a boil.
- add the veggie shortening.
- cook about 30 min.
- add the vinegar, apple, and cloves.
- cover and simmer 2.5-3 hours.
- add sugar.
- melt butter in a separate pan.
- add flour and stir until combined.
- add to cabbage mixture and stir until thickened.
- add salt and pepper to taste.
