Chocolate Caramel Squares

Yields: 5 dozen

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 ounce) bag  caramels
  • 23 cup evaporated milk, divided
  • 1 (18 1/2ounce) package  regular  German chocolate cake mix
  • 34 cup butter or 34 cup margarine, softened
  • 1  cup  chopped  nuts
  • 1 (6 ounce) package  semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Combine caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in top of a double boiler; cook, stirring constantly, until caramels are completely melted.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Combine dry cake mix, remaining 1/3 cup milk, butter and nuts; stir until dough holds together.
  4. Press 1/2 of cake mixture into a greased 13x9x2 inch baking pan.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 6 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle chocolate morsels over crust.
  7. Pour caramel mixture over chocolate morsels, spreading evenly.
  8. Crumble remaining cake mixture over caramel mixture.
  9. Return to oven and bake 15 to 18 minutes; cool.
  10. Chill 30 minutes and cuts into small bars.
