Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1⁄3 cup shortening
- 2 1⁄2-3 tablespoons water, cold
- 1⁄2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
- 1 teaspoon paprika
Directions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Sift flour and salt. Cut in 3 tablespoons of shortening until the mixture looks like corn meal.
- Cut in the rest of the shortening until the particles are the size of small peas.
- Add cold water by the tablespoon, mixing with a fork, until the dough forms a ball.
- Roll the dough out on lightly floured board. Dough should be 1/4-inch thick and 6 inches square.
- Sprinkle grated cheese (2 tablespoons) and 1/4 teaspoon of paprika on dough.
- Fold the square in half, pinch the edges together and roll out again.
- Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons grated cheese and 1/4 teaspoon paprika. Fold; repeat with grated cheese and paprika two more times.
- Roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into strips 1/2-inch wide and 3 or 4 inches in length.
- Bake on ungreased cookie sheet about 10 minutes or until cheese straws are golden brown.
