Cappuccino Bread Pudding

Ingredients
FOR CUSTARD
- 1⁄2 cup brewed espresso or 1⁄2 cup strong coffee
- 1⁄2 cup sugar, plus
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 6 large whole eggs
- 4 large egg yolks
- 3 cups half-and-half
- 3 cups day-old egg bread, 1-inch cubes
- 1⁄3 cup sliced almonds, if desired (optional)
FOR CARAMEL SAUCE
- 1⁄2 cup sugar
- 1⁄4 cup water
- 3⁄4 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
