Cabbage Sausage Supper

This is a very good and hearty old-fashioned dish that I think came from Taste of Home. It's almost like a stew or even a soup. I have tried it with keilbasa but it wasn't as good. I like to serve it with rye bread. Show more

Ingredients

  • 2  lbs  fully cooked smoked sausage, halved and cut into 3/4 inch slices
  • 1  large onion, cut into eights
  • 1  head cabbage, chopped
  • 12 cup water
  • 1  lb carrot, cut into 1/2 inch slices
  • 5  medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4 inch cubes

Directions

  1. In a Dutch oven or soup kettle, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until sausage is lightly browned and onion is tender; drain.
  2. Add the cabbage and water.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in carrots and potatoes.
  5. Cover and cook for 25 to 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
