Bushnell Brown Bread

Found this recipe while reading a biography of the Canadian folk music great Stan Rogers. This was published in the book as his grandmother Bushnell's bread. I tinkererd with the original recipe because I found it too sweet and too salty. It's great! Enjoy Show more

Yields: 4-5 loaves

  1. Proof the yeast in 1 cup of warm water for 10 minutes.
  2. Cut the lard into the dry ingregients.
  3. Make a well and add the yeast mixture and molasses.
  4. Add the water a little at a time until you have a pliable dough.
  5. Knead on a lightly floured board for several minutes.
  6. Allow to rise until double, placing in a greased covered bowl.
  7. Form into loaves and place in greased bread loaf pans.
  8. Allow to rise until doubled.
  9. Bake 300F for 1 hour.
