Brown Soda Bread

This is typical Irish brown soda bread very popular in Ireland. Full of flavor and high in fiber. Great with soup or just with a butter. Show more

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Spray loaf pan 9"x5".
  3. In a large mixing bowl mix all dry ingredients.
  4. Melt butter add molasses and stir well.
  5. Mix buttermilk and eggs together.
  6. Pour all wet ingredients into flour mixture.
  7. Stir with wooden spoon until just combine.
  8. Don't over mix or it will be dry.
  9. Spoon into loaf pan and sprinkle oats on top as a garnish.
  10. Bake 35 - 40 minutes or until bread sounds hollow when you tap the tops with your fingers.
  11. If necessary, cover with foil for the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent overbrowning.
  12. It will double in size.
  13. Let it cool for 5 minutes and remove from pan.
