Basic Marinara

If you prefer a sugar free version, replace the sugar with 1/4 cup peeled, chopped carrot stirred into to the oil along with onion and garlic. For a spicer sauce, add 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes before simmering. For a meaty take, cook 1 pound lean ground beef or pork along with onion and garlic.   1. Heat oil in medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally,10 minutes.
  2. Add tomatoes and their liquid, tomato sauce, dried herbs, sugar, salt and pepper. Using clean kitchen scissor, cut tomatoes into bite-size chunks in pan.
  3. Bring sauce to a simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer 20 minutes. Meanwhile, in large pot of lightly salted water, cook spaghetti according to package directions. Drain pasta and serve topped with marinara sauce.
