Backpacking Curry

A nourishing dehydrated meal for pack trips. We think it is better than the meals you can buy, and it is probably cheaper and definitely easier on the environment than all that packaging. Show more

  1. Combine rice, water and Better than Bullion in a saucepan. Heat to a boil and then reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
  2. Add spinach (drained), curry powder, dried onion, and turmeric and stir.
  3. Spread mixture in dehydrator and dry for 8 hours at 145 degrees. I split the meal into 4 portions and put one portion on each tray of the dehydrator, but that is not necessary.
  4. After 8 hours, check to see if the food is dry-your drying time may vary.
  5. Split the mix into 4 portions and put them in one quart ziploc freezer bags. Note that you need to use freezer bags, not storage bags.
  6. When you are in the wilderness, add 3.5 oz of chicken to each bag and add boiling water to an inch above the food and place in a cozy for 15-20 minutes. Rehydration time will vary depending on how cold it is and how well insulated your cozy is.
