Applesauce Cake

Grandma must have really loved applesauce cake because she had two recipes for it in her box. This one is from Carol. The other recipe was similar and had a suggestion at the end to substitute 3 or 4 tablespoons of cocoa for an equivalent quantity of flour to make Cocoa Apple Sauce Cake. It advised that Apple Sauce Cake keeps well.

Ingredients

• 2 3⁄4 cups flour
• 2  cups sugar
• 1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
• 3⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1⁄2 teaspoon clove
• 1⁄2 teaspoon allspice
• 1⁄2 cup shortening, soft
• 1⁄2 cup water
• 1 1⁄2 cups unsweetened applesauce
• 2  eggs
• 1⁄2 cup  chopped walnuts
• 1  cup raisins

Directions

1. Combine dry ingredients.
2. Cream together remaining ingredients.
3. Mix.
4. Bake at 350 F 45-50 minutes.
