Directions

  1. Combine syrup ingredients in saucepan.
  2. Stir over medium heat until dissolved.
  3. I make lots of syrup and don't necessarily put in all the sugar; add to your taste.
  4. For dumplings, measure flour (without sifting) into mixing bowl.
  5. Add baking powder and salt.
  6. Stir well to blend.
  7. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  8. Add milk all at once and stir with fork until flour is well moistened.
  9. Turn out onto lightly floured board and knead gently 3 or 4 times.
  10. Roll dough into a rectangle, 18"x 12", 1/4" thick.
  11. Spread apples (and raisins) over dough and sprinkle with topping.
  12. Roll as firmly as you can as you would for a jelly roll, starting at 12" edge.
  13. Cut into slices 3/4" thick and place in a 13x9-inch pan.
  14. I don't leave much space between each roll.
  15. Pour Hot Syrup over dumplings.
  16. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes, until tops are lightly browned.
  17. Serve warm with cream or vanilla ice cream.
