I like to eat and so from that I learned to cook for myself. Like everything, you learn from experience. I have two daughters. My oldest went to a boarding school in high school and when she came home on the weekends she would always bring a friend or two with her to get a home cooked meal. I took pride in being able to fix something that the girls would enjoy. I still have at least one meal a week for my daughters and friends. In the summer, the grill is very popular. The other times of the year, I use RecipeZaar to find something that people will like. I use my crock pot a lot. To me, even if preparation time and cooking time are short, I would rather use the crock pot because I know when I get home I'll have something ready to eat. One thing I do if the preparation time is long is do all the chopping and what not the night before and put the crock pot in the refrigerator over night; I just pull it out before I leave for work and plug it in. Since I work full time I cook a lot on the weekends. I freeze what I make and pull out what I need from the freezer for my meals. January 2009, I made a New Year's resolution to begin exercising with the following goals: - Look better - Feel better - Get back to a 32 inch waist I have attained all of those goals and this is how I did it: I purchased the P90X workout videos and started going through the routines. The program requires you work out six days a week. The first 90 days I did the 'classic' schedule. The next 90 days I did the 'doubles' schedule which has you exercise twice a day four times a week and once a day the other two days. All routines are one hour long except Yoga X which is 1 1/2 hours and Cardio X which is 45 minutes. After this I went back to the 'classic' schedule. By the fourth time through the 90 day program, I had switched to doing the ab routine in the mornings and the other routines in the evenings. During my fifth time through P90X, I decided that I wasn't making as much progress as I wanted so I bought the Insanity work out videos. The Insanity videos are intense. They are built around the idea of Max Interval Training. What this basically means is that you exercise at the most intense level you can for as long as you can. The routines came with a diet plan. The P90X routines came with a diet plan too but I never followed it. The diet plan makes it simple. You should: 1. Eat five equal meals a day as opposed to three 2. Your meals should have an equal amount of carbs to proteins with a smaller amout of fats. 3. Don't eat for at least 2 to 3 hours before going to bed 4. Don't let yourself get hungry (the reason for more frequent meals) 5. Drink plenty of water The diet plan also provided guidance on how many calories you need to consume to maintain your weight. They recommend using the Harris-Benedict formula. Each recommended meal is about 300 calories (25 grams protein, 25 grams carbohydrates, 10 grams fat). Meals can be adjusted up or down based on how many calories you decide to consume. Why am I telling you this? Again RecipeZaar has come to the rescue for me. Recipezaar has a great feature for every recipe at their site. As long as people put in realistic portions for their meals, you can see the exact mix of carbs, proteins, fats and calories for each portion. Update 9/29/2012 - I've been trying to eat more vegan recently to see how this effects my health, mind and body. I've been doing this for about 3 months now with positive results. I am still doing P90X and Insanity.
