I didn't learn to cook from my mother or grandmother. They thought studing was more important. I learned from my friend Rose's grandmother, a 90 year old woman from Italy that didn't speak one word of english. Her kitchen rules were. Hair off the face, clean, clean, clean and always simmer your sauce for at least 4 hours. She taught me everything you could want to know about Italian cooking. She made me swear never to give out her sauce recipe to anyone but my daughter. I have been offered money to part with the secrect. It's still safe with me. I make my own breads, jams, and yogurt. I'm trying to leave as small a carbon foot print as possible. I choose veggies from local farmers markets over large supermarket chains.
