Welcome to the New Food.com!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Our little site is all grown up — we've moved out of Beta mode and are proud to announce our official launch. We're so grateful to the tens of thousands of you who've already registered for free accounts, and we hope you've enjoyed exploring the site.

So what's different now? Previously, in order to search for recipes from around the web, we asked you to register for an account. Now searching recipes does not require you to register or sign in. You can search, browse, filter and print all kinds of recipes from some of the best food sites on the web — no registration required. Pretty cool, right? We think so too, if we do say so ourselves.

So when would you need a free account now with Food.com? We ask that you sign up so you can enjoy the following benefits:

1. Storing recipes in your universal recipes box
2. Downloading the handy Food.com toolbar, which allows you to save recipes right from your favorite food sites
3. Uploading your own recipes in the mix

Learn more about all of these great features in our FAQs.

We hope you enjoy the new experience at Food.com, and we wish you Happy Cooking!

Happy Beta Birthday!

Friday, December 05, 2008

In the Beta invitation you received we explained that this is a real Beta, meaning we are actively developing and debugging while you are playing with the application. It’s considered a “Closed Beta” because of the controlled guest list. It’s a bit like having special friends join us in the kitchen while we cook.

We’ll use this space to let you know what’s up: the known issues, when the next application release is planned, what’s in new releases, etc… Speaking of which, we’ve got some known issues. Three worth mentioning are:

1. Cannot navigate to recipes from the recipe box
2. Messaging in certain interstitials is incorrect
3. Trying to upload a recipe from the bottom nav bar while on a 3rd party site yields a system error

We have a release scheduled for the end of December. The bugs mentioned above are on track to be fixed in that release, along with certain other issues. We’ll also be releasing the Toolbar then. With the Toolbar you’ll have more flexibility in what recipes you can add to your recipe box, from where, and when.

We encourage you to tell us what you think, and what you find. You can send feedback to feedback@food.com, or log bugs by sending an email to bugs@food.com. If you are logging a bug, please let us know as many specifics as possible including what browser and computer platform you are using.

Thanks for participating. We hope you like the taste of it!

ALPHAbet Soup

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

A note on our first release

"Alpha" is a partial build that affords us great opportunity to smoke out issues within the application - in a containable way. We focused on Search for the Alpha since it is the connecting thread between the four major components of phase one. In case you are wondering, those four components are:

1. Vertical Search
2. Universal Recipe Box
3. Recipe Upload
4. Toolbar

When you're searching you may notice some things behaving a bit wonky (like the filters, and bits of the 'snack bar'). We're on it. At least, we are 'on' the things we know about. Please do let us know if you encounter something you suspect is more than just "not quite finished yet".

Under the "not quite finished yet" header, you'll see hints at the other three major components throughout. Once we've stabilized Search, and cleaned up the major bugs ("major" as in show stopper), we'll have releases for those components. And once the four major pieces of our product puzzle are in place, the invitations go out. It's not too far off.
