I found this excellent recipe on iowagirleats.com after trying a couple other recipes and having them turn out too thin and tasteless. The butter in this really makes all the difference - don't leave it out! For a 6 quart crockpot, this recipe could easily be doubled.
This recipe comes from my Betty Crocker cookbook, though I have adapted it somewhat. This loaf rises quite high and makes great sandwich bread. Although it is supposed to be a 1.5 lb loaf, it worked as a 2 lb loaf for me.
This recipe saved me when my stand mixer died on me and I wanted fresh buns for breakfast. I was worried these wouldn't rise, especially with only 1/2 tsp yeast, but they turned out very well. The original recipe come from http://swallowtail.org/dairyfree/ but I added a bit more spice. So little work for such great results! Make sure you start these the night before you want to bake them. Prep time does not include rise times.
