This was once called "Depression Cake", due to the economic times, and it may see a revival yet again. Cooks Illustrated has renamed it "Wacky Cake".
Do not mix this in a bowl first, mix it right in the cake pan.
this was a hit at the bbq. Everyone I know does the typical pasta salad with black olives & tomatoes, but the artichokes, REAL bacon bits, Vermont cheese and green olives were a hit! I like trying new things.
A well traveled family friend gave us this recipe and we have always loved making this comfort food.
A small fresh salad and fresh fruit in season usually goes with the pie.
You could also use ground chicken or turkey instead of beef.
If you are unable to find tomato sauce with roasted pepper just use 24 oz tomato sauce and 1/2 cup chopped marinated sweet red pepper.

Here in Washington state we are lucky to get Walla-Walla onions
for a short time and this make a nice busy day casserole.
I'm sure you could use any sweet onion and get the same taste.
