From the Indian Creative Cooking cookbook. I've made this again and again and love it. True winter recipe to put some warmth on your body and heart. Really miss it this winter since my blender broke.

This is a very traditional autumn and winter dish here in Bulgaria. It is almost always done at home and probably that is the reason why I find it to be so comforting when I feel down or lonely or homesick. Or, simply, when I want to feel at home.

This is an extremely popular snack food here. Lately it is becoming less popular in cafeterias but it is still a favorite at almost any home. Feel free to alter the condiments but keep the pepper, the onions and the cumin. You could also grate some cheese on top, or add it to the meat mixture.

I don't know about other places in the world but in Bulgaria it is awfully hard to find a skim milk fruit flavored yogurt with no sugar added. But I found a way to indulge even when I am on a diet. And here it is.

My boyfriend and I have this joke going on about the little green men from Mars and how they only have green stuff to eat. So this must be exactly their cup of tea. Or should I say their bowl of salad.

This is something I came up with when I was on a diet and watching my calories. Turned out quite good though, and my Mom still requests it from time to time. Let’s see if you like it. By the way, cook time is valid only if you boil the eggs and the potatoes one after the other.

Bansko is a mountain resort town in Bulgaria so, you have guessed it right, one more entry from the Bulgarian National Cuisine cookbook.

    Recipe #79685

This seems to be quite on the low-carb side. It's supposedly a typical Bulgarian dish again from the Bulgarian National Cuisine cookbook of Zemizdat. By the way I'm guessing at fish quantity because there is a typo in the book and it's missing. Cook time is boiling time for the eggs.

    Recipe #79185

This recipe is typical for the Strandja Mountain region in Bulgaria. Once again, I took it from the Bulgarian National Cuisine cookbook of Zemizdat.

One more thing out of the Bulgarian National Cuisine cookbook that I am planning to try. It comes from the region of Veliko Tarnovo. And it does sound appealing, doesn't it?

    Recipe #79183

This one comes from Rex Hunt Fishing Adventures and the segment of Chef Lain Hewitson. I told a friend about it and she asked me to write it down. I decided someone else might like me to share it too; so, here it comes.

This is a recipe I have not tried yet but I found it in an old book about traditional Bulgarian cooking and it sounded great. I decided to share it so here it is. If you happen to try it, please share how it came out and what kind of cheese you used. By the way, I'm guessing at preparation and cooking times.

I had some red beans left over in a can and I invented this simple way to finish it off. I liked it. Let’s see if anyone else will. :-) By the way, it is one serving because I often only eat salad. It probably would be enough for two if you serve it as a side dish.

    Recipe #72725

This is just something that I came up with last Friday and my parents really loved it. I, however, had the feeling that it missed something, but can't say what. That's why I leave the recipe open to suggestions.

This is one of my favorite breakfasts when strawberries are in season. Prep time includes waiting for the sugar to melt.

    Recipe #71385

If you need something to fix in a hurry or you don't have too much time to spend in the kitchen this is ideal.

Fast and fun although probably not the healthiest meal on Earth. They go well with French fries, fresh salads, tarator or simply some bread.

    Recipe #71382

This is my Mom's variation of the classical Bulgarian Moussaka (which I have also posted). It might have more steps but it's easier to bake. Cooking time includes boiling the potatoes while you fry the chicken.

Unlike what you might expect, this is one of the easiest dishes in my repertory. In takes time to bake but preparation is a breeze. There are an awful lot of different moussakas that I suppose all originate from different parts of the Balkans. This is the most popular one in Bulgaria and when you order moussaka in a Bulgarian restaurant this is exactly what you are going to get. All others are named after the veggies used -- moussaka with zucchini, with eggplant or vegetarian moussaka (rice and vegetables).
