This recipe is well known to Portuguese families. Linguica is a spicy Portuguese sausage and can be found in specialty markets, some chain markets or online at such places as Gaspars.com.
TIP: I like to add 1 large can of crushed tomatoes with puree instead of the tomato sauce. This makes it more like a stew and thicker.
I ran across this recipe and thought this would be a fun family activity. I received an ice cream ball as a gift that has the same concept. A great "family time" activity with a sweet reward at the end!
This is a tradition in Rhode Island! When I was growing up there was an amusement park on the shore called "Rocky Point". It had a huge Shore Dinner Hall that served a meal of lobster, chowder, clamcakes, sweet corn and watermelon. This is the original recipe for the red chowder. It makes 20-8 ounce servings so you may want to cut the recipe in half. Serve with my clam cake recipe. Close your eyes, take a bite and you are in Rhode Island!
We just returned from Alaska and we were fortunate enough to take a float plane to the Taku Glacier Lodge in Juneau. Salmon is grilled over an open alderwood fire and served with this recipe for dessert. Check out my other recipes from the Taku Glacier Lodge.
