    This is an excellent side to many Indian dishes but this is the best served with dhal curry. Try it with my meat dhal curry.

    This is my Aunt Sakina's recipe. It is an excellent banana snack cake which uses semolina instead of flour but you wont even know the difference it is so light and fluffy and jam packed with banana and flavour. Do give it a try you wont be disappointed! It makes a huge 9x13-inch pan cake and can be halved successfully. It does not require icing. Lovely for tea-time.

    Milktart is a very famous and well liked dessert here in South Africa. Both the Cape Malay and Afrikaner people have versions of it. After much trying and testing and many flops I find that I get success with this recipe. Milktart is tricky in the sense that when you pour the filling on the uncooked pastry you must do it carefully or most preferably spoon it as if any filling makes a tiny hole in pastry the filling will leak in the baking process and you will have a doughy tart as the crust will rise to the top. This is a Cape Malay version. Serve this with tea for a yummy treat. This makes a large 13x9 inch pie.

    Since one of the themes on Zaar this month is comfort food I thought I would submit this. This is my ultimate comfort food. This is a dhal curry which is made with meat. Serve with rice, salads, sambals, Indian pickes and crispy spicy fried potatoes. Mmmmmhhh. NOTE: It can be made with red meat or chicken, if using chicken please remove the skin. Use the oil dhal type that you will find in most Indian spice shop preferably. If you cannot find it then use gram(chana) dhal or red lentils. But will not be the same as when using oil dhal. The second list of ingredients are the tempering spices used.

    In the Cape Maly Cookbook by Faldelah Williams she says that Bredies is an old Cape name for a dish of meat and vegetables stewed together so that the flavours intermingle and it is impossible to separate the one from the other. The unique flavour of the bredie is determined by the vegetable used. Although almost any vegetable can be used the meat is almost always lamb or mutton. Mutton is ideal for bredies as the long slow simmering tenderizes it and brings out the full flavour. Recipes for bredies have been handed down through many generations and they changed very little in character over the years. The flavour is delicious that there is no need for additional herbs and spices.
