These little guacamole bites are over the top addictive! They are so unique as well. A great addition to any appetizer platter. Serve with a salsa based dip for a perfect balance of flavour. :-) These do require some prep time, but are well worth the effort for these once in awhile, indulgent, treats.
**note** prep time does NOT include freezing time
Garlic and soy flavour these delightful and simple to make bagel chips. Delicious as a stand alone snack or served with your favourite dip. Recipe adapted from one found in a recipe booklet put out by a soy sauce company. :)
Beans, cheese, guacamole, salsa... how could this recipe possibly be GOOD for someone? It is though and it is absolutely delicious. Full of vibrant colours and flavours, this is sure to be a hit at any get together. No one will be able to tell it is lower in fat than your standard layered nacho dips and before you know it, they dish will be empty and they'll be begging for more! Do yourself a favour and make a big batch. :)
This recipe comes from the fantastic dynamic duo from the "Eat, Shrink and Be Merry" tv series. ***note*** cook time is time it takes to chill.
This recipe combines the goodness of oven roasted vegetables with the flavours (and cheese!) of a hearty french onion soup. I came up with this recipe when I had a craving for both roasted veggies and french onion soup but didn't want to go to the trouble of making both! Make sure to serve this with some nice crusty bread to help soak up the yummy juices. :)
Feel free to swap out the vegetables listed for those to suit your preference. It's good to use ones of similar texture and cooking time though so that everything cooks evenly. (example: don't put delicate asparagus with harder veg like turnip) You may also want to use more or less cheese, depending on your taste.
I love flavoured and spiced nuts and i also love garlic. It just made sense to me to combine the two and make a delicious snack! Perfect for garlic lovers. Makes a nice addition to a snack tray for a potluck, party, etc. :) If you are watching salt intake feel free to substitute garlic powder in place of garlic salt OR use unsalted cashews.
A delightfully refreshing chilled soup -- this recipe is perfect for a hot summer day, a BBQ or even dinner party. The presentation is simple yet elegant, and the soup itself is so good and easy to prepare. There are other avocado/cucumber soup recipes posted here at Zaar, but this one is different and contains an additional ingredient: shrimp! :)
This recipe was adapted from a similar one found in HomeBasics magazine. Also note that "Cook Time" is the time required for proper chilling.
This recipe takes the classic tuna melt and makes it even better! Kaiser rolls are stuffed with cheese and tuna, wrapped in foil and baked until melty and delicious! A must try for all sandwich, tuna, and cheese lovers out there! Feel free to adjust the amount of mayonnaise/cheese used. Also, in place of the capers you could try pimentos, olives, celery, etc. -- Experiment and enjoy. :)
Delicious and simple, this recipe is good enough for company, yet easy enough for a quick, everyday meal. I like serving this right in the parchment -- just carefully cut the tops open and peel back the paper a bit. This recipe goes nicely with rice or cous-cous and a nice, cold glass of chardonney! :)
A simple and delicious way to serve cucumbers. This is a refreshing alternative to a classic caesar salad. Great for a picnic, BBQ, lunch, side dish, etc. Can be made well before planning on eating as the longer the cukes sit with the dressing, the more flavourful they become. :)
Love bearnaise sauce but are watching the calories? Even if you aren't a health nut, cutting back on saturated fats and extra calories is a good idea for most. This recipe takes the classic taste of bearnaise and makes it lower in fat and calories. The taste is familiar and velvety smooth, but better on your waistline! How can you go wrong there?
A sweet and tangy snack. Perfect as is or as a crunchy, flavourful addition to a nice salad. It also makes a really nice gift -- just put it in a pretty jar with a ribbon. This recipe should come with a warning though because these are HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! :)
I came up with this recipe because I love honey mustard pretzels and I love cashews -- so it just made sense to see if I could successfully combine the two.
Feel free to adjust seasonings to your liking. Sometimes I add in a bit of cayenne pepper for a bit of heat, but that is optional so I left it out. This recipe is also nice for peanuts, almonds, walnuts, etc.
Crunchy on the outside, and tender on the inside with just a hint of garlic, this easy to make dinner goes perfectly with a nice green salad and/or some roasted potatoes. Recipe adapted from one I found on the back of a frozen fish filet package some years ago. ***note*** You may substitute low fat caesar dressing if you are watching calories.
Delicious and healthy, this salmon salad is quick to prepare and perfect for lunch or to bring to a potluck. Can be served hot or cold - it's great either way! Feel free to adjust seasonings to taste. (I like adding extra garlic sometimes because I am a garlic fiend!) Sliced, ripe olives are also a nice addition.
An interesting and attractive appetizer and snack. These cheese snacks are delicious as is or served along side some japanese rice crackers and/or edamame! Also excellent as an appetizer or for a party tray. :)
This creamy cauliflower based dip is so delicious you'd never guess it to be low fat! Delicious as a dip for veggies, pita chips, pretzels, etc. It is also fantastic used in wraps and as a sandwich spread. (great flavourful alternative to mayo!) This is also a great way to sneak some veggies to your kids when served with crackers or chips. :)
A healthy, fresh and delicious salsa that utilizes the wonderful radish. This is a Salvadoran recipe that is traditionally served with carne asada, but it also goes great with fish, tofu or chicken. It even is wonderful as a dip for tortilla chips or veggies! :)
This refreshing salad will surprise you and your guests with how well the flavours work together. At first, it might seem strange, but one taste and you will be hooked. The cool, crunchy watermelon is the perfect base for the pungent, greek flavours - it's a perfect balance of savoury and sweet.
A similar salad was served to me at a cafe a few years back. I had always remembered it and finally decided to try to recreate it. This is about as close to the original I could get. :)
***note*** Feel free to experiment with flavours. Try adding in some fresh basil OR fresh mint in place of the balsamic vinegar. Or leave out the vinegar altogether.
A healthier and lower calorie alternative to potato chips and the fancy veggie chips available because these are not fried! These beet chips make a wonderful (and pretty!) snack. Good for packing in a lunch, serving at parties or just nibbling on. These are chips you can feel GOOD about eating. :)
This is a delicious and lower fat/calorie alternative to traditional deviled eggs. Instead of filling the whites with yolks and mayo, these easy to prepare eggs are stuffed with hummus! Experiment with different flavoured hummus -- there are many commercial variaties available at most grocery stores, from garlic to roasted red pepper.
Perfect as a quick, protein rich and healthful snack, or as a unique hors d'oeuvre. Kids love these too!
A vegan version of the classic Chicken A La King, this recipe uses tofu as the main ingredient. Delicious as a main meal and is liked by both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I've served this to my very "Meat and Potatoes" type parents and they both love it. My neice, who is normally a very picky eater, will gobble this up as well so it's good for kids too. :)
Serve with a side of veggies or a nice salad and you have a delicious and healthful complete meal.
***note*** Feel free to adjust the amount of mushrooms and peas to your liking. Carrots go nicely in this dish is well, but it's optional so I left it out of the recipe.
