German Chocolate Cake is at the top of my list of favorite desserts. Which is why I don't make it very often! Especially since I like to create an extra thick topping that is piled on top rather than running off like a glaze. When I make it, I ask the kids to hide it from me, but the trail of cake crumbs usually gives away the hiding spot. The best solution I have found for my lack of self-control is to make this cake when we have company and then encourage them to take some home when they leave. The last time I was slicing it for guests to take home a friend called me on it and said, "So you want us to eat it for breakfast instead of you?" I told her that was exactly my intention and she said, "I don't have a problem with that." Now, that's a good friend! This is a great recipe to serve when some of your guests cannot consume dairy. It is so easy to replace the dairy found in the recipe with coconut or almond products without compromising the original flavor of the recipe. If you don't have German's Sweet Chocolate you can use a substitute.

It is just too hot to bake up a banana bread, so when you have bananas that are starting to turn brown whip up a batch of these Banana & Strawberry Popsicles. This is a classic fruit combination and one of my kids favorites. And, because this is a 100% fruit recipe with no added sugar I don't feel bad about letting my kids have a popsicle for breakfast! Yes, I let my kids eat these popsicles first thing in the morning. Score mommy points!

I LOVE the 4th of JULY! We are so blessed to have friends who own acreage who have a "party" every year. There are about eight families that get together - to eat, drink, socialize, and blow stuff up. Yep, we are fireworks luvin', hope we don't have to go to the hospital, can't believe you spent that much money, 4th of July family. As I was saying (before I got sidetracked on fireworks), we spend our 4th of July's with a great group of friends who bring a great number of side dishes to go with the great number of hamburgers and hot dogs we eat. So while I could have talked about the cheap hot dogs (at Price Chopper or Hy-Vee) or hamburger (at Price Chopper, Hen House or Hy-Vee) - I decided to let those stand on their own and talk about some great side dishes. This dish contains items that are on sale, are tried and true picnic favorites, and won't break the bank.

Have you ever made a recipe that you just weren't sure about? Even while I was baking this, I didn't know if it would be good or not. I had the idea to change up the recipe for Tuxedo Bars and I had a strawberry cake mix in the pantry. Chocolate and strawberries go together, right? I asked about the cake on Facebook, just to see if others thought it sounded good. I also wanted to know what kind of icing to put on it. I couldn't decide between chocolate, vanilla or strawberry. After reading all the opinions or friends, I decided to go with strawberry icing. The result was marvelous! The fresh strawberry frosting really set off the cake and the mini chocolate chips gave it just enough chocolate flavor. This make a 15x10-inch sheet cake, so it's great for a crowd. But I think it would also freeze well, if you have more than you can eat.

Last year my kids (ages 8, 6 and 3 at the time) decided they wanted to make a recipe "on their own," so we tried the Strawberry Shortcake recipe on the back of the Bisquick box - worked like a charm! I gave each of them regular table knives (not too sharp) so they could slice the berries, and they measured and mixed the simple ingredients for the shortcake themselves. They felt like total rock stars after we assembled their beautiful (and delicious!) desserts!

Freezer Jam is a great option for fresh berries in the summer. I have been wanting to try a Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream Recipe for some time now! I received this Cuisinart Ice Cream Machine months ago and to be perfectly honest with you, it intimidated me a little bit. The idea of making ice cream at home sounded like a daunting task, but that couldn't be further from the truth! I finally decided to try out my new machine to make some Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream and it was amazing! You don't realize how much better homemade tastes until you have tried it yourself. Plus, there is the added benefit of knowing exactly what ingredients you are giving your family. That's right, we can actually pronounce them all too. ;) The best testimony I can give you is from my son who does NOT like strawberries. He could not get enough of this ice cream. He didn't even seem to mind the fact that there were strawberries in it at all! Tip: The recipe calls for pureeing only half of the strawberries, but after putting in in the freezer a day we all agreed that the strawberry chunks weren't great. So next time I will puree all of the strawberries for a more creamy consistency.

I LOVE Strawberry Lemonade from Chili's (or any other restaurant for that matter)! This is a big problem for me because we save about $10 on our restaurant bill by only ordering waters. So I never get to have one of my most favorite drinks. In fact my mouth is watering right now thinking about it. I have tried several times to recreate the perfection that is Strawberry Lemonade on my own without success. It is a great day because I have found this recipe for Strawberry Lemonade Concentrate! It has very few ingredients and sounds super easy to make, and I'll have Strawberry Lemonade on hand anytime I want some at a fraction of the cost!

Here is the recipe for the Strawberry Pie I made the other day. Just for the record I used frozen strawberries and then let them defrost and they were absolutely fabulous in this recipe. Without further a do...The Yummy Strawberry Pie courtesy of my friend Katie. I believe it is a family recipe. This makes 2 pies.

I am SO happy to see summer arrive this year! I'm looking forward to the laid back, slower paced nights of stargazing, barbecues, and lounging on the deck with my family. Last summer we had just bought this new house and our nights were filled with nothing but late nights of hard work to fix it up, so it will be nice this year to be able to really enjoy it. I came up with this new recipe that I loved and I think you'll love too! In fact my son who hates strawberries gobbled down two pieces in just a few minutes right before my eyes! It's no secret that I love strawberry lemonade, in fact I just made up another batch of the strawberry lemonade drink I shared with you here. This was my inspiration for this dessert.

With fresh berries from last week's trip to the U-Pick Strawberry Patch and the rhubarb from my very own garden, I baked the most delightful summer dessert this past weekend. If you are unfamiliar with rhubarb, it is a very tart vegetable that masquerades as a fruit in summer desserts. The sweet strawberries and the tart rhubarb blend well together, but the dessert definitely needs to be paired with your favorite ice cream or whipped topping. My favorite is homemade whipped cream. Enjoy!

I have had this recipe with so many different combinations of fruit. You can use strawberry/rhubarb, blackberry, blueberry, raspberries, etc. Sine it is strawberry season, this is a very inexpensive recipe to make and very good! My kids were able to help me with every part of this project. From cutting up the strawberries, to zesting the lemon, and measuring out all the ingredients. These are also sturdy bars for traveling.
