    This recipe was created one evening as we prepared to decorate our Christmas tree. I had all the necessary ingredients to prepare *Alia*'s Ghost cocktail (Recipe #258081) except for the half and half. We had just returned from the store, where we'd picked up a small carton of eggnog. The rest kind of wrote itself. To the "ghost" of Marley, and the "ghosts" of Christmas past, present and future! Please note that my husband and I prefer alcohol to be a secondary flavor in our drinks - if you are accustomed to stronger drinks, you may want to add more vodka as desired. As written, this is a great "starter drink" for those that might not be so bold. For those making larger batches, this comes out to approximately 6 parts eggnog to 1 part of everything else.

    This was an invention I created after realizing that I had a prepackaged salad bag due to expire in a couple of days. The rest came together after rummaging in my pantry and fridge for a while trying to think of what else to add to the lettuce. Despite the lack of planning, the flavor was a success and something that I plan to use deliberately in the future! Feel free to use fresh lettuce if you don't like the bagged idea, it usually tastes better even if you do lose a little bit of convienience. This is a very simple salad, so you may opt to add other ingredients if you are interested. Chopped tomatoes and onions would be great!

    This is a simple lunch and/or snack that I make frequently when I'm in need of something sweet and can't justify eating anything "worse!" Depending on the labels for the English muffins that you buy, this meal can be a great source of protein and fiber, though you wouldn't know it from the taste! I think it would make a great lunch box sandwich for kids as well. I grew up hating peanut butter but I think I might have changed my mind if I'd had this idea earlier in life!

    I recently placed an order at a specialty cookie cutter shop. My cutters arrived along with a sugar cookie recipe that I couldn't help but try despite having had difficulty with cookies in the past. The cookies turned out great, but they were of the "crisp" variety rather than the soft and gooey variety and they needed a topping. This idea flickered into my head and I had to give it a try. I think it may be at least close to original as I can't find anything other than mentions of similar ideas online, let alone at Zaar! Even if it's not really "mine" I think it's special and unique enough to earn a few points. For most desserts I would recommend doubling the recipe; I only had a couple dozen small cookies to frost when I portioned mine out.

    This recipe came to life one night after a Mexican meal. I decided I wanted to find some way of creating a dessert with prepackaged tortilla chips. Unsure of how to go about making cinnamon sugar tortilla chips this way, I opted to try a syrup drizzle concept instead. The result could best be described as cinnamon nachos! I have just listed the recipe for the syrup, as I think that it may go well with other desserts such as pound cake or fresh fruit as well. Feel free to experiment! Also feel free to use the brown sugar Splenda blend in place of the brown sugar. I tried it and the recipe turned out equally yummy!

    This was something I put together while trying to come up with a different way to use mushrooms. I know there are scads of stuffed mushroom recipes on the Web, but I wanted to fly without a recipe and see how it went. The result, in my opinion, was fabulous, and surprisingly simple too. We served our mushrooms with a Caesar salad and some crusty sourdough bread, but the options are endless. Have fun with them!

    My husband and I just don't get into Super Bowl madness the way that most folks do. However, we did decide to use the excuse to make a more elaborate meal than we usually take the time for. The base for this recipe was found on Cooks.com, but I've made some changes to it and this is the version that I made. We served this with a number of different dippers, including chicken taquitos, fried ravioli and baby carrots, but you could use just about anything - be creative! If you are watching your weight, consider low fat dairy options here - they work beautifully. I didn't have the guts to try non-fat but low fat doesn't cause any loss of flavor at all, I promise!

    The base recipe for this trifle is one that I found in a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook from 2003. I have been adapting it many different ways since I first found it, and it has since become a bit of a signature dessert for me. This variation was created as a lighter way to sate a chocolate craving. It is not "chocolate overkill" if you are looking for that, but it is light and refreshing while still including lots of chocolate flavor. Please do make use of low fat and/or low sugar versions of the listed ingredients if you are interested. They will not harm the dessert in the least.

    This recipe has been in my family for at least two generations, possibly more, as my grandmother cannot remember which of my family members gave it to her! As she has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and is advancing in its progression quickly, she can't make it anymore, but my mother and I carry on the tradition for her! This recipe is a testament to her memory. She is still with us as of this posting, but in the future, I'll be able to remember her every time I make it. Emotional attachments aside, it's the best sausage gravy I've ever eaten, hands down, and tends to contain more sausage than even the best restaurants can fit into their versions! It isn't healthy - at all - but you'll at least die happy! Of course it's recommended that you bake your own biscuits from scratch, but failing that, frozen biscuits will work just as well. (You can probably use the refrigerated tube kind too but I always use frozen, they're just better somehow in my opinion!)

    This recipe originally came from Guideposts magazine. I first got to try the result at my mother's house this summer and loved it! Unfortunately, when I got home, I couldn't seem to find the recipe anywhere online. My mom sent me the recipe so now I can make them anytime I want to (and that's pretty often!) Normally I don't re-post recipes that are not personal, but this is an exception as I don't want to lose it and I think others may be having trouble finding it as well! Please note that I have not tried to make this myself yet, so I'm taking these instructions on faith. I will update them if I think they need changing once I've tried this on my own. A couple of quick notes: If you have large muffin pans, this will make 12 large muffins plus 6 smaller (regular) muffins. The listed yield is for regular muffins only. You can also easily do this in a loaf pan if preferred. The recipe also states that you can cut the sugar and chocolate chips in half if you find the recipe too sweet - it will not cause problems.

    This is another recipe handed down from my husband's family. During the stressful meeting-of-the-parents times over the course of our relationship, this hash brown casserole was perhaps one of the only things I could look forward to without some level of hesitation! We still make it as often as we can justify it, which sadly is less often than we wish it were. (Stupid calories.) We have tried making it with low-fat ingredients and it does work nicely, but full-fat ingredients will make it shine. Note that the sizing of frozen hash brown bags doesn't always allow for you to buy a two-pound bag, so you may need to mix and match until you get that amount. We usually have some frozen hash browns left over when we make it, which can be used in any number of other recipes as desired. Also note that the topping is technically optional, but we highly recommend using it. It adds a wonderful texture that we would miss if it weren't included. If you have any casserole left over (no promises!) then this reheats well too.

    This is my adaptation of the Greek "village" salad. I believe the customary tradition is to use olive oil as dressing, but I was looking for something creamy when I sat down to make the salad. If you can find it, I recommend using Uncle Dan's Mediterranean Garlic dressing mix (usually found near the ranch dressing mixes) and making your own dressing as directed instead of using premade Caesar dressing. I've only listed Caesar because it is the closest comparable dressing that I can think of. The cooking time listed is the amount of time the salad needs to chill.

    This recipe has a bit of a background. My mother used to make a wonderful cake called a Bonnie Butter Cake - the recipe is listed in the old orange Betty Crocker cookbook she gave me when I moved out of the house. However, upon trying to recreate this cake for my husband, I discovered a shocking secret - the recipe she uses for the frosting (arguably the best part of the cake) wasn't the one referenced by the recipe! It was too late in the day to call her and get the recipe, so I looked for other ideas. A slight adaptation of another frosting recipe for a Butter Rum Glaze led to my husband's announcement that this cake was possibly the best he'd ever eaten! Now I have a "secret" recipe of my own to share!

    This recipe was given to my husband and myself after we fell in love with the result during a summer vacation to visit his family in North Carolina. The only thing better than eating a wonderful dessert, prepared with love by family members, is being able to recreate it when you can't be together! I can't think of anything nicer on a hot summer day, though this pie is great anytime you want something cool, refreshing and simple. The recipe makes two pies, but my mother-in-law suggests storing the extra filling in a separate container and serving it with assorted cookies if you don't need two pies. Please note the chilling time (2 hours) plus thawing time (30 minutes) and plan accordingly. (I have listed this amount of time as cooking time for this recipe as well.) It will be worth the wait!
