I love anything that's quick, easy & the whole family loves! This fits the bill. Living in the land of "Strudel" any published recipe must be tops or risk destroying its reputation. This recipe originates from "Ja" Kochen's special edition which I've adapted to my family's taste with the optional aspects. (Prep time includes time to boil potatoes).
I can't believe I cut this recipe out of Better Homes & Garden 30 yrs.ago & just found it & made it! It is very light (I didn't make the frosting) & very easy. I can't wait to tell my men they've eaten sauerkraut for dessert, (you'd never know it). The recipe calls for a 13x9x2 pan but I used a Bundt pan adding approx. 15 min. Also prep time does not include frosting.
Vienna is home to the Naschmarkt, a famous open air market featuring...everything. There is one stand known to anyone who has ever been to the Naschmarkt for its Sauerkraut. If the owner likes you he'll take you aside & ask you how you intend to prepare it & then proceed to tell you the "proper way". I am posting this in response to a request & therefore do not have exact measurements for the soup & wine as I haven't made this since last fall but you really can't go wrong. It is truely authentic Viennese Sauerkraut!(The next time I make this I'll edit to be a little more exact)
This recipe originates from Gourmet & is really something special. I serve this every year for Rosh Hashana as an appetiser along with my challahs as pomegranate seeds are symbolically very significant. Very different from what you may be used to but oh so delicious!(prep time includes 1 hour in frig.)
Every year come September I always get requests for my Honey Cake recipe.Half of the Mother's in my older son's class have been making it for years! If you like a moist Honey Cake and a super easy recipe - this is it!I originally got this recipe from one of my nieces and adapted it.
Hot weather and you don't want to spend time baking? This is the answer. Nothing could be simpler or quicker and oh so refreshing! Prep time is only 20 min. the rest is freezer time. You can also try this with what ever fruit you like such as cherries, blueberries, mango, etc. It is also Pareve & can be used for Pesach.
I almost never get to put the topping on this cake because as soon as I've turned my back usually half has disappeared. Personally, I like it better this way which is why I don't really complain unless I have company coming. With minor adaptions, this comes from Classic kosher Cooking.Prep. time is approximate & includes refrigeration.
Since I've been making these Challah's my family refuses those bought in the Bakery & whenever we're invited for a holiday meal somewhere else, the only request is...please bring your Challahs! This, with only minor adaptations comes from The Spice & Spirit of Kosher-Jewish Cooking. Please read all the directions first--yes, they do take a long time to prepare, but only 30-40 minutes or less of that is active time & they are truly worth it!
I love this recipe because it's finger lickin good! I ALWAYS at least triple the recipe & look forward to a little left over Lecho that I can then eat with rice. There is never any Cevapcici left over. The only reason there's any Lecho left over is that my youngest refuses to eat anything but raw paprikas! (Adapted from Ursula Summ)
This "cake" pie is Parve & Kosher for Passover. I had it the first time in Israel when we were invited to friends of my Parents for lunch during Passover. Back in Vienna where we live my kids ask me to make it every week!! I end up making it at least once a month just to have peace but it is truely delecious & everyone loves it. The name of the lady who made the cake where we were invited was Phyllis & this is her recipe.
Most Fridays I bake my own Challahs which taste so good that my family wants something to put on their slices. When I first moved to Vienna my sister-in-law served this for the same purpose & I've been making it ever since as nothing could be easier!
I love this recipe for the simple reason that everyone in my family loves it. My 10 year old smells it baking before he's entered the apartment & his first words are "Thank you Mommy" - my 15 year old gets home & automatically says he's not hungry- the next question is, how much did I make, can one of his friends also eat over.
