This method produces a ciabatta like texture with a wonderful crust. Nutri Flour Blend is a blend of white flour and wheat bran. Experiment with different blends - the result should be a light, holey, rustic style loaf. You will need at least 18 hours before this bread can be baked.
These can be prepared ahead of time and baked when needed. They are delicious served with grilled beef tenderloin steak. A half a potato per person is ample. My husband loves them as leftovers with breakfast the next morning! They're easy to make and very impressive when served.
To this day we still refer to grilled cheese sandwiches as "gorilla" cheese - a name our son, Jesse, gave his favourite restaurant order when he was a toddler! Half the fun, of course, was seeing the waitress' reaction!
This "uptown" version has become a regular for us on Sunday nights.
Rich, moist and delicious. I use this recipe as the basis of almost every cake I make, adjusting flavourings for variety. Examples are: adding lemon or orange zest; replacing some of the flour with cocoa powder for chocolate cake; almond flavouring; adding chopped apple or peaches. Endless possibilities. A real reliable standby.
My version is a little different. I don't add sugar to the filling because of the sweetness of the dates. I also add an egg to the dough mixture which I find prevents the squares from crumbling. These freeze well.
