"This square is awesome"
"Fantastic !! I didnt have corn syrup so I added golden syrup."
"These are very good. They sever them normally around here at bake sales... I can never resist."
"I too used golden syrup instead of corn syrup and baked for 30 minutes. I've made them twice, and both times i only managed a piece before everyone finishes them. But it's so easy i'll be making them again soon."
"Great recipe!I really enjoyed them. I did however find that it took about 30 minutes in the oven for the shortbread to be done. The caramel sauce is just plain yummmy. This recipe reminds me of a twix bar. I definately will be making this again."
"I'm making my second batch (now doubled!) as I type this review. Just exactly how my mum makes it! The first lot was practically inhaled! Just to add, I live in Scotland and corn syrup isn't available here so I used golden syrup. Now I can buy dulce de leche in a can so use that sometimes for convenience."
"This was very good. My niece said it was her new favorite."
"Very good! Reminded me of Twix bars too. Bonus that it's easy to make. I melt the chips on a low setting in the microwave (I don't have a double boiler), then I spread it on top of the cooled caramel. Thanks for the recipe! (Just came back to add another star - I don't know why I only gave it 4. These are delicious!)"
"I am going to give it 0 stars because I am not sure if it was 'user error' on my part. This didn't work at all. The shortbread did not connect with the carmel. I used milk chocolate and it was way too sweat. All in all, a mess that ended up being thrown in the garbage. Here were potential problems: 2/3 cup of butter, is that melted? Flour: what kind, I used all purpose but clearly that didn't work out well for me? Corn syrup - light or dark? I used light."
"these were so easy to put together and tasted very similar to a twix bar.... but better! I did add an extra 1/4 cup of graham cracker crumbs to the shortbread base. I also used the full can of sweetened condensed milk instead of just a 1/2 cup. I also added 1 tes. of vanilla to the caramel once i took it off the heat. and one last thing.... i added nuts to the caramel too. Thanks for sharing such a great candy treat."
"Very, Very good! I was looking for German Shortbread, but this is the same thing. This is very easy to cut, and tastes delicious! Thank you!"
"Umm, yum. Rich and delicious and not overly difficult nor time-consuming to make. A winner at the potluck to which I brought them."
"Oh Bergy, these are definitely a winner! Like another poster mentioned, they DO taste quite a bit like a Twix bar...I might use milk chocolate chips next time instead of semi-sweet, for even more of a Twix-y flavour! Yum...and such a nice thick layer of caramel in the middle! Great recipe!"
"Awesome squares Bergy. I have not given the stars cos I only made part of the recipe - omitted the chocolate topping! Even then this is great - the caramel sauce is just perfect and it melts in your mouth. This is a very easy recipe too - could not believe that something so good could be made in such little time :). Thank you. "
"These are very yummy! Tastes great for something so easy to put together. I liked that it used minimal & simple ingredients, all of which I had on hand. Not really that expensive to make yet impressive. I agree with chef FIFI, the caramel sauce IS just plain yummy and it did kind of remind me of a twix bar(and I LOVE those!) Upon hubby's first bite he said it reminded him of a skor bar! I followed the recipe except I melted the choc. chips in the microwave for about 2 mins. Thanks, will use this recipe again."
"I made these to take to work and there just weren't enough to go around! Delicious."
"I have had this recipe for years. It is awesome!! I have no leftovers when I take it to family gatherings, etc & have given the recipe to many people. My English MIL makes shortbread cookies, spreads the caramel mixture on top, then dips the tops in chocolate. They are delicious, but one gets the same taste with this square, there's more caramel, & it's EASIER!!! "
"These were good, but not nearly as good as I thought they would be from all the reviews. I personally would only give them 2 or 3 stars, but I'm giving 4 because my kids loved them. I don't see the Twix comparison at all, I LOVE Twix bars and these tasted absolutely nothing like them to me, so I don't see where others are getting that taste from them(a comparison made by other reviewers, not the person who posted the recipe). If I tried them again I think I will make some changes to the base because it was really dry and crumbly and couldn't support the rest of the square. A better base might help the overall taste and ease of eating for the square. They were also hard to eat because the chocolate on top hardens so much so it's really hard to try and bite through it while the rest of the square is so soft.
I like the idea of the square(chocolate and caramel, who could not!) but I think I will do some tweaking to the recipe if I ever try them again."
