"I grew up eating at this fast-food restaurant and then it suddenly disappeared. Now they are back and their hamburgers and shakes are just as good as they ever were. Their chili cheese fries are delish! Of course, now I only eat at this restaurant on special occasions!!!"

"I've been making Steak and Shake Chili for along time and I recently moved from the St. Louis, MO area and misplaced my recipe that I cut out of the St. Louis Post Dispatch several years ago. This recipe is close but the consistency is too thick. I added 32 ounces of tomato sauce and added more chili powder and it's very close to the original recipe. Thanks for getting it as close as I remember!"
"AWFUL. Nothing even close to Steak and Shake chili. Whomever wrote this recipe obviously has never been to on. don't waste your time and money on this recipe thinking you are getting chili that tastes anything like the chain Steak & Shake."
"I used 2 T of chili owder, 1T sugar instead of cola, 2 large cans of tomato sauce ,1T of coco and up to four cans of beans. I add about 6 oz of water and you can add more water later . It may not taste like Steak and Shake, but I it makes good chili!"
"I cannot say if this is like "Steak-N-Shake's" chili because I have never been there but this is a great tasting chili recipe. It is not spicy so perfect for the wee ones. I used 2 cans of mixed beans instead of kidney beans and I added a bell pepper to it only because I had one that needed to be used. I used a 19 ounce can of tomato sauce. I did appreciate the sweetness the cola offered the chili."
"This is a good -- I think kid-friendly -- chili, with a slightly sweet finish from the Coca Cola. Although we still prefer our house chili, DH celebrates each time I make a chili. Some days a mild-mannered chili is just the ticket. Made for Please Review My Recipe tag game. Updated from 12/03/13: We reheated the chili, even better this time!"
"It has been so long since I ate at Steak-N-Shake, I can't say how close this is to the original, but it was good. I simmered it for about 2 hours before I added the beans, and it was getting pretty thick, so I had to add about 1/2 C. of water to thin it out a little. I used ground venison instead of beef. My wife loved it."
"This is good chili. But don't be mistaken, this is no-where close to Steak n Shake Chili. I was utterly disappointed just by the fact I was hoping it was close. SnS has nothing to fear.
The closest chili you can find to SnS that IS NOT SnS is Ray's Brand Chili. But - you don't need close when SnS and Rays side side by side on the grocery store shelf.
If you do some minor searching online - you will find out the the Original owner (I believe) of SnS sold the recipe to Rays years and year ago. Hence the similarity.
I've looked at the ingredients and soy plays some role but I don't know what.
The taste, though, of SnS (and Ray's) in unmistakable. I'm sorry this recipe isn't it."
"Although I pretty much followed the recipe, I did use low-sodium kidney beans & tomato products & have found another chili recipe that tastes great & does well in the freezer, too! There is a chicken chili that we like very much, but this one is a nice change of pace from that, especially, I thought, with the bit of cocoa & the Pepsi (which is what I used) in it! A keeper of a recipe, for sure! Thanks for sharing it! [Made & reviewed in 1-2-3 Hits recipe tag]"
"This chili was very and close to Steak-N-Shake. We added some water during cooking...We like it juicy. My husband wanted a little "bite" to it so we added hot sauce and red pepper flakes. We took it to a Chili Cook-Off and it was a huge hit!"
"I have never been to Steak-n-Shake, so I have nothing to compare this recipe to, but I thought the chili was delicious. I made this as written using Diet Coke and added a little water because it has a very thick consistency. I loved the flavors in the chili, and the leftovers made an excellent Cincinnati Chili. I will be using this recipe often during the upcoming cold winter months. Made for October 2011 Aus/NZ Swap."
"Great spices in this, made this as written ommitting the salt, and used Pepsi. Made for a good light dinner for the 4 of us on a cool night. I have not been to steak n shake in quite a long time, so I can't compare, but it was quite good. Made for Holiday tag."
