"This was super great chili! I have my own tried and true recipe, but I figured I would try this since I needed to use the crock-pot. Well, my family flipped over it and my husband said I outdid myself! (I explained that I couldn't take the credit!) I used small white beans and light kidney beans for the puree. I didn't put them in the blender, instead I put them in the crock-pot first and mushed them up with a potato masher. I love this part of the recipe, because my family is getting more fiber and they don't have a clue! I have never used cumin or coriander and was worried they might be too strong but the chili tasted like...well...Chili! Thanks so much for sharing! P.S. I used 2 lbs. of ground beef...otherwise, didn't change a thing. NOTE: The spice mix makes enough for at least two batches of chili."
"I was recently asked to make chili for a chili cook-off at work. I searched the internet and this one had such good reviews I had to try it. I didn't change a thing, except doubled the recipe. I work in a hospital and there was a monetary first prize and my pride on the line. I won! Thanks Debbie"
"Wow! I love finding a good chili recipe and the concept of this one got my attention. The basic recipe is very good as is, however, I did make several changes to suit my tastes in a chili. The seasoning mix is very good and I used as is. To make the meat mixture I added 1lb of chopped sirloin, 1/2 lb groung turkey, a cup of chopped onion, 1/2 cup of green pepper, and 1/4 cup of jalapeno pepper (seeded and chopped) when browning the meat. Then added 3 cloves of fresh chopped garlic to the meat during the last minute of browning to release some flavor. When assembling in the crock pot I substituded spicy V8 for the tomato juice (I like to know I get some kick in any chili), added 2 shots of expresso, and a tablespoon of chopped semi-sweet chocoIate. At the end I added another teaspoon of cumin and cayanne after putting all ingredients in crock pot to add some heat and get more of a smoke flavor going. Pureeing the beans made a big difference in the texture; great idea. When pureeing I drained the beans and added a tablespoon of chili sauce to loosen up the mixture. The basic recipe as is is very good and has great texture. EXCELLENT RECIPE!"
"Very tasty, thick, and easy Chili recipe. The first time I made this, I did it exactly like the recipe says. The second time, I added all the seasoning. Both ways are excellent!
The first time I made it, I drained the beans. The second time I made it I didn't drain the beans. I liked the second time better.
This chili is thick, a bit spicy and warms up nicely.
I added this to my "Favorites" cookbook. I will be making this again and again."
"This really is VERY good chili! i had never made chili before, this fit the bill PERFECTLY because it was so nice and THICK (i hate "soupy" chili), i used a can of refried instead of putting the beans in the blender and i think that makes all the difference in the world as to the consistency of the dish...THICK! i also used a pound and a half of ground beef and a half pound of ground (Jimmy Dean) sausage. i then added some finely diced green pepper and onion (about a 1/4 cup of each that i saute'd with the meat) a little Frank's Hot Sauce, a small can of tomato paste, a couple dashes of Worstechire and about 2 tsps of cocoa powder and it was PERFECT. it was hard to let it sit and cook for 6 hours in the crock pot without running over and "tasting" it every few minutes! I'll definitely be keeping this chili recipe...it was awesome. Thanks Debbie!!"
"This is so similiar to my recipe but decided I would give it a try since I had to make two crockpots of chili to take for my daughters field hockey concession stand. This was very flavorable and I loved the idea of placing the other can of beans in the blender. By doing this, it made the chili reacher. The only two changes I made was to add some finely diced celery and 2 Tablespoons of sugar to take the bite out of the tomato sauce. Thanks for a great recipe."
"This was an exceptionally good chili....i'd never made it in the crock pot..and i will be making this again for sure..i did cook some diced onion and minced garlic along with my meat, and used 1 can of tomato puree and 1 can crushed tomatoes (both 28 oz cans) and used ALL the remaining dry ingredients in the sauce. it had a perfect "kick" to it...i did add some salt and sugar just to suit our personal tastes, but the entire family LOVED this! topped with some sour cream and shredded cheese, and some crusty bread to sop up the very last drop..DELICIOUS!"
"Great Chili! I have been using this recipe for about a year now, and always get lots of compliments. My husband calls it the best he has ever eaten, though I think he may be a little biased. When I initially made it I mistakenly added tablespoon-sized portions of the seasoning mix to the chili instead of teaspoon size, and I used fresh garlic instead of garlic powder. The mistake turned out great. The chili had a little extra kick to it. I have since continued to use the tablespoon size. You'll still have extra seasoning mix, and I just keep it for next time. I also added a half of an onion, instead of a tablespoon. This chili is great on it's own or can definitely be changed up a bit by adding additional ingredients."

"we really enjoyed this chili.however I changed 2 things to make it more suitable for us. I put a can of tomato paste in it, and a bit of brown sugar, and I didn't have the coriander for it. a great chili recipe!! loved that some of the kidney beans were blended."
"Incredible recipe! I didn't change anything (except a little extra cayenne and garlic powder,) since this was my first time making chili, and EVERYONE LOVED IT! My Mom is known to make a good chili, and she even admitted it was much better than her's, and that she was annoyed at the fact since I had never attempted to make chili before. Loved it! Will try experimenting with some extra add-ins next time, I think it would be even better with some green pepper and with the spicy- factor kicked up a knotch or two! I'm so glad the recipe for the seasoning mix makes so much more than you need for a single batch. I will definitely keep this seasoning mix handy, and since money is tight this holiday season maybe I'll get some nice little jars, print some labels, and give out a slightly spicier version of this seasoning mix to a few chili-lovers I know!"
"Turned out great! I made the following modifications based on what I had on hand: ground turkey instead of beef, pureed whole tomatoes 1 tbsp tomato paste (instead of diced tomatoes and tomato sauce), used chili beans instead of plain kidney beans, and added an extra can of beans, and added one chopped onion to the meat while cooking. I loved the idea to puree a can of beans! Made the chili thick and hearty.

"It tasted okay following the exact recipe. I ended up adding all of the spice mixture, 1Tbsp of salt, 2 1/2 tsp of paprika, 1 more 28 oz can of diced tomatoes, and 2 more cans of bean (I pureed 1). Then the chili tasted increadible! I guess I just prefer my chili with a bit more spice and sauce. Thank you for the recipe, I will make it again with my adjustments for my taste buds."

"made this recipe to the letter. don't quite get the point because you are cooking the meat prior to dumping it in the pot with all the other ingredients. the end result was not 'chili spicy' as a chili might be. it was bland/very mild at best; very 'tomato-ey'. pointless to mash up the can of beans too as it did not thicken or do anything much for the final product. on a 1 to 10 i'd give it a 5-6 at best. hope i can find some other use for the remaining 'chili spice mix', this recipe makes way too much of it (note, the recipe only has you use 5 or so tsp of spice mix)"
"very good. Used 1 lb of hamburger and added 1/2 green pepper and 1/2 of an onion and a little bit of celery. Did blend the second can of beans. Also, used 1/2 of the spices and didn't save any for later."
"We liked this chili, but I'm a little confused by recipe for the spices. The spice mix makes too much for one recipe, but not enough to make it twice. I ended up tossing the remaining mix, which was a waste."
"As written recipe I prepared in crockpot for 6hrs on low. Chili lacked depth and richness which I expected after slow cooking. It seemed to be lacking that special punch of flavor. If you like a mild chili recipe, perhaps this may be a winner for you. My husband and I didn't care for the Oregano in the recipe."
"As the other reviewers said, the flavor on this chili is excellent. My husband said it tasted like restaurant chili. My only issue was that the recipe used amounts of the seasoning mix twice, but it wasn't the full amount, so I wasn't sure if that was correct. Should comment that the additional seasoning should be kept for future use? Also I didn't have time to puree the second can of kidney beans. Used a can of pinto beans with peppers. Was excellent."
