"A thirty year old recipe that just seems to get better with time. I went to visit my daughter 3000 miles away and I still had to make the stuffing for dinner."
Serving Size: 1 (209 g)
Servings Per Recipe: 8
"Excellent recipe! This was the first I made stuffing from scratch and needless to say I was very impressed with myself!! The flavors were so good. I was worried about using sausage, since I'm not really a pork person but it was perfect. My husband loved it. In fact, he thought it was better than his mom's! Can't get any better than that."
"i used all corn stuffing from a bag. turned out great except i do have to agree w/ others that since i didn't stuff it into a turkey i should have added a little more liquid. other than that will definitely make this again. thanks!"
"This is an excellent recipe for stuffing. I made it for Thanksgiving and I was pleased with the results. I received several compliments from my family members about how good this was. I used homemade cornbread cubes and toasted french bread cubes as the bread. I omitted the mushrooms, eggs, and salt and used only 1/2 tsp pepper. We like our stuffing on the dry side so I also omitted the eggs as well. I assembled the stuffing the day before and baked it on Thanksgiving day. I noticed that the spices were more dominant the second day and the stuffing was a tad more moist. I thought I should mention that just in case anyone makes this stuffing the day ahead like I did. Thanks crazymom for sharing this recipe. It's a great recipe so I will use it again."
"Well, I couldn't find my mom's stuffing recipe so I used this one as it seemed very close to hers. It was fantastic!!! This will be my new "go to" stuffing recipe! I followed the recipe exactly and it was perfect! Thank you so much for posting!"
"Very good stuffing but I think it could use a little more chicken broth. Slightly dry. We cooked some in the turkey and some outside and both were slightly dry. I used the full amount of broth but next time I will use more."
"So I usually make my mom's version of sausage stuffing, which is similar to this, but it doesn't have the cornbread mixed in. I decided to try this and it is WONDERFUL. I tweaked it just a bit because i'm not a fan of nuts in stuffing, so I omitted them, used one extra package of sausage and instead of using regular butter, I used 1 cup of unsalted butter. In the past I have found that salted butter along with the sausage has the potential to make the stuffing rather salty. I can honestly say that this is probably the best stuffing I have ever tasted. Thanks for sharing your fabulous recipe!!!"
"This recipe was so easy to make and very flavorful. I was a little nervous about using mushrooms and nuts but I did anyway and they were so subtle and such a nice compliment. I will definitely be making this stuffing again!"
"My first attempt at making stuffing and it wasn't perfect... but it was certainly very good. Everyone wanted to give it a try because it smelled sooo yummy. I agree with FromKatesKitchen - this amount makes a HUGE AMOUNT and would easily serve double (16). We had 7 over for thanksgiving and there's no way we'll be able to finish the leftovers...."
"I've been married for A LOT of years now, and this is the very FIRST recipe my mother-in-law has asked me for! So simple and the best I've ever had."
"Made for Thanksgiving...by request! (I actually made this last Thanksgiving and it was so memorably yummy, that my family specifically requested again this year.) I prepped the sausage and sauteed the veggies the day before. So, all that was left to do on Thanksgiving was just to throw in the remainder of the ingredients and bake. I had to add a bit more broth this time, but this is most likely because it had all night to drain away the excess oil (I used leftover bacon drippings) while resting in the fridge. So yummy...for me, the pecans steal the show with the recipe...just love the addition of them. No need to wait for another Thanksgiving when it is easy enough to make and enjoy more often! Thank you."
"Loved this recipe. Of course I made some changes but followed the basic recipe. I used fresh corn bread and white bread. No bread crumbs. I also added more liquid. Everyone thought it was the best stuffing ever. Flavorful and light. Thank you. This is my new homemade stuffing."
"I followed this recipe exactly except I used 3 cups of chicken broth (I could not locate turkey and did not have time to make my own) and it came out perfect! I also sautéed the vegetables for a little longer, about 10 minutes as opposed to 3 minutes. I made it for a potluck at my husband's work and everybody went crazy over it! This was my first time making stuffing from scratch and it was a complete success. Thank you for sharing!"
"I use chives instead of onion and I add in green peppers and raisins. The raisins really bring out a lot of the other flavors. I've heard dried cranberry might be a good addition. I do agree that adding more liquid is a good idea. I added a bit more the first time because I knew the raisins would swell but I added about a cup more the second time to eliminate dryness. That was the best try yet. Happy cooking!"
"Made this stuffing for Thanksgiving this year in place of the tried & true one I have always made - we found a new stuffing recipe - absolutely the best. We don't have turkey as our protein as my SIL doesn't care for turkey, had tenderloin and this dressing was a beautiful compliment to the tender beef. I can't wait to make a turkey though and stuff with this as I'm sure it will only be better. Thanks crazymom for posting and giving us our new & improved stuffing.
***Update Thanksgiving 2012
Finally got to make my turkey this year, SIL agreed to give it a try, and as suspected this dressing was outstanding in and outside the bird. Thank you again crazymom - my new tried & true dressing recipe."
"Oops - in addition to my raving review I forgot to mention that I did make two minor tweaks to the recipe. I used a little more chicken broth (2 cups versus the called for 1 1/2 cups). The extra broth in my opinion was perfect, we like moist (but not soggy) stuffing. I also used a couple tablespoons of natural butter flavored EVOO to saute the veggies instead of the 1/2 cup of butter it called for. Other than that, I followed recipe exactly and oh my goodness was it delicious!!"
"Excellent! First time I have made stuffing from scratch. I omitted the pecans because I was feeding some picky eaters. I received rave reviews! The stuffing was perfectly moist with the amount of broth called for in the recipe. Will definetely go in the recipe box."
"I'll be honest here and state that I am NOT a stuffing fan, so when it came time for me to host Thanksgiving, I was in a panic. This sounded decent, so I went ahead and made it... and to my pleasant surprise, it was amazing. Everyone loved it! Thank you!"
"Topped with my homemade gravy, this was the highlight of our Thanksgiving meal! Very good, thanks for sharing!"
"By far, the best stuffing I've ever had. I loved the added vegetables as most stuffing I've tasted do no have that. I followed the recipe exactly and had no issues with it being to dry, as I saw a few people write... and DID NOT stuff it in the turkey! When everyone talked about their favorite dish after dinner, this stuffing was at the top of their list."
"The best stuffing I think I've ever had! I used chicken sausage from Trader Joe's and a bit more broth than suggested. It was out of this world yummy. Thanks!"
