"This recipe I believe is Pennsylvania Dutch. It has been passed down in my family for generations and they have all absolutely loved it and still do!! Try it for yourself. The ham flavors the potatoes and green beans and gives them a wonderful flavor! Its quick and easy and complete meal for your family!"

"My Penn Dutch family in Bethlehem, PA, would disown me if they knew I used canned green beans to try to copy their dish! None of them own crock pots and, for sure, none of them us ANYTHING from a can! But I did have some canned green beans and some deli ham and thought, "what the heck" and threw them in a crock pot with some quartered potatoes, salt & pepper. After 6 hours I checked on them. What I got was mushy green beans, tasteless ham and bland potatoes. Not good at all! Dumping stuff in a crock pot from a can is for college students on a budget. This was just gross and can't believe I wasted my time & electricity. It can be done just as easily but with so much flavor using fresh beans, potatoes and a ham hock. The ham hock is what imparts it's flavor in green beans & potatoes."
"Thank you so much for this from a super pregnant mama dying in the Texas heat! I have not felt like cooking and my picky DH and 3-year-old have been snubbing everything I make lately anyway. This was SO easy and we all loved it. I bought packaged Hormel diced ham (two 12 oz. packages). I added some apple cider vinegar to taste. Then when I served it, I doused my plate with more apple cider vinegar. A pregnant woman can't resist vinegar! This one is a keeper. I'm still amazed at how simple it was."
"I made this with a smoked pork butt (cottage ham) and added one medium onion and used fresh new potatoes while adding pepper and garlic powder in my crock pot. Came home after 6 hrs cooking on low to a great easy meal"
"This was good. I added a bit of vineager to the bowl and it was excellent."
"I tried this as written first and liked it, but did not love it. The second time, I added 1 can cream of Cream of Mushroom soup, 1 tablespoon each of garlic powder and onion powder, and a half cup of sharp cheddar cheese, and lots of pepper. I really loved the final product. It came out a little more creamy, which to me made the flavors coat the items better and took care of the blandness that I didn't like the first time I made it. Great base recipe and simple to make, just don't be afraid to add some seasoning."
"This turned out pretty well, and was very easy to make. It made way more than 4 servings, though ;) I added 1/2 Tbsp garlic powder for personal taste."
"Very easy and yummy. Makes it easy to feed my hungry teenager!"
"A great simple dish, made even better by using red salad patatoes, fresh or frozen green beans, and some bacon grease for flavor."
"Love it. This was wonderful. Easy to make, delicious to eat. I used ham hock. Thanks."
"I've been making this for years, it is SO easy but a great meal to make in a jiffy. I add butter and seasonings to mine and sometimes chicken broth in lieu of the juice from the cans."
"I made this for an office luncheon. It went over pretty well! I used 4 (8 oz) ham steaks, diced and 4 cans of green beans instead of 3. Due to time contraints, I cooked it on high for 4 hours. Next time I think I'll add some bacon and seasonings to kick the flavor up a bit. Thank you!"
"Been making this for years, but it's even better if you add some cooked, crumbled bacon with the drippings."
"I took this idea and ran with it. I had left-over baked ham in the freezer, raw new potatoes, and frozen green beans to mix in the crockpot. Since there was no canned liquid to use, I substituted chicken broth with a pat of butter, a splash of lemon vinegar, a sprinkling of sugar and some fresh ground pepper as was suggested by other reviewers. Everything came out perfect and so delicious and no sodium from the canned goods. DH was loving the mixture of flavors. I will definitely make this again."
"This was a nice, one-dish meal. Great flavour combination but needed a little something extra - maybe seasoning salt?"
"DH who is part Pennsylvania Dutch LOVED this recipe. I use about 1/4 cup liquid smoke and didn't change anything else. This recipe went right into my 'zaar stars cookbook!!"
"This is a great "shortcut" version of my Pa Dutch Nana's ham and string beans; it doesn't get easier than this! (She used all fresh ingredients). I added a little butter like Nana did. As you mentioned about the vinegar...Nana used to add a little vinegar and a little sugar, so I did the same. It really adds a lot to it! Thanx for sharing. I'll make this again."
"Was very simple to put together!"
"This was an awesome dish. My family just loves this. The ham really makes the potatoes and green beans have a heavenly flavor. This recipe will be made often in my home."
