"There are many great gooey butter cake recipes out there but this is different from the cake mix variety because it has a yeast dough bottom. I grew up eating these cakes from a little bakery in Clayton, Mo and this recipe is as close to those as I've ever come across."
Serving Size: 1 (113 g)
Servings Per Recipe: 16
"I grew up in the St. Louis area. I'm 62 years old, so I've had more than my share of real St. Louis Gooey Butter Cakes, and this recipe doesn't even come close. I spent a whole afternoon preparing it, and ended up throwing it out. It not only didn't taste like Gooey Butter Cake, it was awful."
"Ok. I grew up in St. Louis. On his way home from work at 5 a.m. my dad would pick up Gooey Butter cakes from a bakery on Telegraph Rd close to Lemay Ferry Rd. (A mom and pop storefront no longer in business) It was comparable to the other bakeries in the area. I made this recipe today for my son's birthday and he thinks it's awesome but doesn't know really how it's supposed to taste. The center has a flour taste and is hard on the top and gooey and pasty inside. The cake is definitely missing something, perhaps cream cheese? It should NOT taste like flour. Period."
"Yum! I love Gooey Butter Cake. This was time consuming for me but I am not a baker. Next time I will use a 9x13 to see how this turns out. I think I ate half of this myself!"
"My Husband and his family are from St. Louis and I have the original recipe and this one is just like it. The bakery that made it closed in 1989 and this is the same recipe that the St. Louis cookbook printed. The ones made with cake are completely different."
"I made this recipe to the T. Though it was a decent cake, the yeast flavor was pretty pronounced and overpowered the other flavors, giving it a bit of an off taste. I also found that making it in the 2 9" pans, that they baked short and seemed like it needed more height. My dough did rise enough, yeast was fresh, etc. Maybe it was me...I dunno, but it seems like it needs a bit of tweaking to get it right."
"Amazingly good cake!!! The yeast cake on the bottom was marvelous, but the gooey top - OMG, seriously addictive. If it wasn't for the fact that we had company when this cake was sliced, I would have been having at it with a spoon... LOL! I'm not from St. Louis, so I can't judge this cake vs any others. But the homemade yeast dough has got to be better than a box mix. Everybody loved it!"
"Amazing! Exactly like what I used to get at Lake Forrest Bakery!!! Thanks for posting :-)"
"I was planning on making a "short cut" version - another recipe on 'zaar that uses cake mix for the crust and cream cheese in the "gooey" part. However! I totally forgot cream cheese at the store! Lucky mistake. I used cake mix, butter, and an egg for the crust and then this recipe's directions for the "gooey"... SUPER YUM!!!"
"This was excellent. I haven't had a St Louis gooey butter cake before ,but this was the BEST. Made for fall pac 09"
"This is The ONE. When ever I visit Des Peres my Mom always Makes me a Gooey Butter Cake. She uses the Box Cake recipe one. I always say Mom why would you make this when you can go to the store and get the realy thing! I now live in San Diego and have made this a few times It is the best. Thanks for posting this."
"Having never had a Gooey Butter Cake before I wasn't sure what to expect from this recipe. Ive always had my eye on the cake mix variety but hesitated in making one based on reviews stating it was very sweet. I'm glad I chose to try this recipe! The flavor of the gooey butter portion reminded me of a sugar cookie. Is that how it should taste or is it my craving for a bakery style one? It is a different type of cake having a yeast dough base. It is sweet but as long as you portion servings I don't find it overly sweet. The only issue I had in baking was I think my crust was a bit over baked by the time I was seeing any kind of color change in the gooey butter. I don't believe that this is the recipes fault. I just have a oven that at times has a mind of its own. Needing many home baked goodies this month I have chosen to do cakes in honor of Chef-I-Am and the Cake-A-Thon in her memory."
"A bit too sweet for me. But the yeast dough base was a dream to work with, a really fun cake to make!"
"great and easy recipe. never made anything like this before. used all organic ingredients where i could. thanks for sharing! really liked your photo on the bio page! i hope you have a wonderful year."
"The is the right original recipe and an outstanding cake. Thanks for posting."
"Wonderful recipe. I have been searching for a good gooey butter cake that tastes like the ones from a bakery here in St Louis and this one is it! Taking the time to make the yeast dough bottom really makes a difference!"
