"This simple dish is a New Year's Day tradition in our home, as it is in many homes across the southern part of the United States, and the recipe is based on one that was published in a local newspaper many years ago. We like ours doused with hot sauce and served with cornbread. Prep time does not include overnight soaking of peas."

"Delicious! I made this exactly as directed, but instead of using a ham hock I used a smoked turkey leg I had in the freezer. I would have loved to use both the ham hock AND the turkey leg, but I couldn't find the ham hock in the freezer that I swore was in there. So as a substitution, I used good bacon, which I sauteed with the onion, garlic and celery in the beginning. Barely needed any extra seasonings other than called for. So good, I will be making this again! Thank you GaylaJ!"

"I made this for our traditional New Year's Day meal. It was a delicious dish to eat those lucky peas. I used a ham bone and added a chipotle pepper. Served with cornbread, asst garnishes, and greens. Happy New Year Gayla!"
"This was a winning recipe. Tripled the amount and cooked it in two big pots: simmered slowly on the stove and in a crock pot several hours today. Sauteed one cup of celery with the onion and garlic. Served with plain white rice, sauteed collard greens. For garnish, we had four different types of Tabasco sauce, green onions and fresh parsley. "I'd been looking for something different for dinner New Year's Day and I found it in this recipe. It was the whole family's first taste of black-eyed peas and Hoppin' John and everyone enjoyed it. I used pork shanks and served with ham and cole slaw. Happy New Year to you and yours GaylaJ!"

"An excellent recipe for the New Year. =) The only addition I made was to add a couple of small chicken thighs to make the broth. Then I added the chopped chicken to the ham pieces. Yum! I will make this tasty recipe again!"
