"Based on Slow Cooked "baked" Beans, Slow Cooked "baked" Beans by Grease. I changed the recipe to make it vegetarian and to accommodate my very large crock pot. This recipe should be able to be halved pretty easily. Cooking time will vary according to how long you have soaked the beans, what size crock pot you have and the kind. Different ones seem to cook at different temps. This recipe is on the sweet side, so adjust for your own taste. Would taste great with veggie hot dogs."

"This may be the best recipe I've made in the crockpot, but I used this recipe as a guide and tweaked it a lot. It's far too sweet, I cut down the brown sugar but will cut it again to 3/4 c. I used a bottle of beer instead of the water, and crushed tomatoes instead of ketchup, and a whole onion and two cloves of garlic. For very little work we have a delicious pot of beans and lots to freeze."
"Yes, these beans are sweet, but there's nothing wrong with that! I did halve the recipe without a problem. I didn't use fakin' bacon, so I added a few drops of liquid smoke. I also used fresh minced onion instead of the dried flakes. The beans tasted wonderful and did not dry out after all those hours of cooking. Thanx for sharing this!"
"These are wonderful beans. Mine were not actually vegetarian, as I used homemade chicken stock. Really, I was more interested in meatless baked beans (without bacon), so this worked just fine for us. I used one pound of navy beans and 1 pound of great northern, and splenda brown sugar (at half the stated amount), and left out the fake bacon. We put the soaked beans in, and then mixed the other ingredients in a bowl. Poured them over the beans and mixed well. I'm so glad to have a crockpot that actually cooks beans until they are soft! (My old one did not.) These are very sweet beans; the kids loved them. We served them with hot rolls and frozen peach slices. Wonderful dinner. Thanks."
"Some of my family are vegetarians and some not, This recipe was wonderful, but as others did I tweaked it a bit. I used 1/4 cup of molasses, 1 cup of onion (instead of the powder) and 2 large cloves of garlic (instead of the powder). I also used a 1/4 tsp of smoke flavoring. It is also good w/barbeque sauce for 1/2 of the ketchup for some added zing. Since some of us like bacon, I cooked it half way through in the slow cooker, then took out half of the beans, put in a casserole dish w/ bits of partially cooked bacon and cooked in the oven on about 250 degrees covered for the remainder of the time."
"These are very yummy beans and will last us several meals as it makes a TON. I did feel like they were missing something, maybe more garlic or some smoke flavor. I think I will follow another reviewer suggestion and add some smoke flavor next time. I also decreased the brown sugar by a third and they were still very sweet. These were very good though and I will definitely be making them again!"
"I agree. Very good! My crockpot is rather small so I baked them in a large covered roaster at 300 degrees until they began to thicken and then turned the oven down to 250. It took the beans about 6 hours to cook. Thanks for a delicious recipe."
