Apple Strudel

Ingredients

    1. 2 cups all-purpose flour
    2. 3 teaspoons baking powder
    3. 2/3 cup sugar, plus
    4. 2 tablespoons sugar
    5. 1/2 teaspoon salt
    6. 1/4 cup shortening
    7. 2/3 cup milk
    8. 1/4 cup melted butter
    9. 3 cups cored and peeled apples, chopped
    10. 1 teaspoon cinnamon

    Frosting

    1. 2 cups confectioners' sugar
    2. 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    3. 1 tablespoon butter
    4. 3 tablespoons evaporated milk
    5. 1/4 cup chopped nuts

Directions

  1. Strudel: Sift together flour, baking powder, 2 tbsp.
  2. sugar and salt.
  3. Mix in the shortening.
  4. Stir in the milk to make a soft dough.
  5. Knead 25-30 times on a lightly floured board.
  6. Roll out 1/4" thick.
  7. Brush with melted butter.
  8. Cover with the apples.
  9. Sprinkle with remaining 2/3 cup sugar, and the cinnamon.
  10. Starting at the long end, roll up like a jellyroll.
  11. Put it on a greased cookie sheet.
  12. Curve into a crescent shape.
  13. Bake about 30 minutes at 325F.
  14. or until done.
  15. Frosting: Combine confectioners' sugar, cinnamon, butter and evaporated milk.
  16. Frost the strudel while still warm.
  17. Sprinkle with the nuts.
