Worth It Ground Beef Curry

"This can be made with any meat. My husband prefers beef. He is a meat and potatoes man but this is for some reason one of his favorites anyway! It needs some simmer time and has many ingredients. I make a 4x batch and freeze."

directions

  • Brown meat.
  • Drain and set aside.
  • In same skillet, melt butter.
  • Cook onions, seeds, cloves, garlic, bay leaf, and cinnamon stick for 10 minutes.
  • Add curry powder, salt, pepper and tomato paste and fry for 3 minutes.
  • Add browned meat and sour cream.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Cover and cook 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove seed, cloves, cinnamon stick and bay leaf (I have a friend who refuses to find the seeds and cloves. Her husband loves this so much he doesn't mind occasionally biting down on them!) Serve over rice.
  • Top as desired.
  • My husband loves the fruit chilled.
  • He tops with nuts and coconut, then whatever fruit we have chilled, then chutney.
  • He eats until he hurts!
  • I leave out the pepper.
  • This dish has a lot of flavor and does not need hot, but some people need chutney to be hot.

  1. Good starting point. I doubled all the spice quantities except the cayenne. Still was not hot. Don't be afraid of spices. Add garum masala, liberally!

  2. I found this recipe when searching for something to do with the ground beef, onions, and garlic I'd already started cooking. Because those ingredients were already cooking together I omitted the onion and garlic from the next step. I also used coconut milk instead of the sour cream due to a cow's milk allergy. My husband loved it!

  3. Very, very yummy! My whole family liked this a lot. I did use three tablespoons of curry powder (we really like curry) and I did not use the cardamom seeds but only because I did not have any. Will definitely make again.

  4. I was quite pleased with this. I too used ground cardamom rather than whole. The only slight problem I had was that the spices burned a bit when I added them to the pan, I guess I should have turned the heat down. I added pineapple and peanuts on the top. I just Love the suggested toppings!

  5. Really excellent recipe! My house smelled heavenly even the next day. The smell brought everyone out of their rooms to check the the progress of this meal. A real winner! I substituted ground cardamon for the seeds, which were cost prohibitive. I think I'll make a 4x batch next time - it was such a hit!

I have lived all over the USA but my heart is in the MidWest. I bake for fun, to the point where I have to keep a rolodex of people to give things to in order to spread it around!
