    Little Mama Dia's Note:

This recipe is an adaptation of Tortillas de Harina. You can substitute any flour for some or all of the whole wheat. I have used half spelt or oatmeal; I even stirred in some nutritional seaweed flakes and flax seed. It takes a little practice to roll out even tortillas, but having funny hand-shaped ones are much more fun :) You may want to make a double or triple batch to save for later.

    Ingredients:

    Yield:

    tortillas

    Units: US | Metric

    Directions:

    1. 1
Mix flour, salt, and baking powder with your hand.
    2. 2
Work oil into the flour mixture until crumbly (I use my hands, it's more fun!).
    3. 3
Add warm water and let rest 5 minutes.
    4. 4
Take a small portion and pat it in a ball. Roll flat like pie crust on a cutting board.
    5. 5
On a VERY hot pan, cook until bubbles form. Flip and cook until raised bubbles are dark brown. These will cook very fast. It takes some practice to get your technique in time with rolling, cooking, flipping, rolling, cooking -- :) Watch for burning!

Note: Yield depends on the size you make your tortillas.

I am rating these 5 stars for taste - they were great. The dough was a little tricky to work with but once I got the hang of it, it went much more smoothly. Thanks for sharing!

Well I'm hesitant to leave a review or divvy up stars on these, only because of what I did wrong. I think the recipe is a very good one. The flavor was good, but now to my issues..... I think I rolled them way too thick since I only got 4 tortillas, then I had the pan wayyyy too hot and scorched them. I think I wasn't fast enough in flipping either. But all in all I will definately try these again, 2nd time the charm? Made for PAC Spring 09.

I have never made tortillas before, but this sounded like an uncomplicated, highly rated, fairly healthy recipe. I had such high hopes that I doubled it. Silly me. It was a disaster. Didn't look, taste, smell or roll like tortillas should. They stuck to the counter and the rolling pin, they fell apart, they didn't blister or bubble, and they taste like cardboard. Either I'm the world's worst tortilla maker or this is the world's worst recipe ... give it a shot if you dare, but don't say I didn't warn you.
