This is an old recipe I got years ago from a good friend of mine. My children won't eat store bread anymore because of this recipe. Freezes well.
- 59.14 ml sugar
- 3 package traditional yeast
- 1419.54 ml very warm tap water
- 4.92 ml salt (heaping)
- 118.29 ml oil
- 2839.08 ml all-purpose flour
- In a large mixing bowl put in the sugar.
- Add the water and sprinkle with the yeast.
- Let stand 10 minutes.
- Stir yeast mixture with a whisk.
- Add salt and oil, stir again.
- Gradually add flour one cup at a time, stirring with the whisk until too thick to stir.
- Swich to a wooden spoon until dough comes away from the sides of the bowl.
- Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 8 minutes while adding remaining flour.
- Spray an extra large bowl with vegetable spray.
- Place dough in the bowl.
- Spray dough with the vegetable spray.
- Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place 1 1/4 hours.
- Punch down dough, turn out onto floured surface and cut into 5 pieces.
- Make each piece into a ball.
- Spray 5 loaf pans with vegetable spray.
- Shape dough balls into loaves, place in the pans.
- Cover with a towel in a warm place for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Place loaves in oven and bake for 35- 40 minutes.
- Cool on wire rack.
This recipe marked the first time that I have ever attempted to make homemade bread. Everything went great, and the loaves baked up beautifully. The kneading part was very messy, the dough was horribly sticky. I would suggest that you measure out all the flour you will need into a separate bowl that way when your hands are all messy you don't have to keep reaching into the flour bag (or maybe you already do this, I didn't think about it until I was covered in dough). But, like others have said, when it came to the punch down part, the dough handled very nice and wasn't sticky at all. However, the bread itself does not have much flavor. None at all really. The texture and consistency are very nice, but it just takes like flour and water. I think I will try this recipe again however and double the salt and sugar. Maybe even triple the salt.
I tried making this recipe changing the measurements to two loaves. Unfortunately this didn't work out. I didn't want to rate it on the fact that I did not use the exact recipe.
This bread was the best bread I ever baked. The instructions were super easy to follow. It was so light and fluffy. Not heavy like I'm use to. I did change the recipe the first time because I didn't have enough yeast and the second time because I only own 3 bread pans. I found the dough a little sticky but I attributed that o the fact that I used the change button. The rising times are bang on I think that is why the bread is so light and tender. I'm throwing out my other bread recipe. This is the one for my family. I changed this recipe to make 3 loaves, the first time I made 2 loaves and 1 pan of buns but they were too big. So today I made 3 loaves and a pan of buns. Just the perfect size. I figure this recipe makes 5 large loaves. Delicious Kristy
