I know this recipe slightly different..instead of peppermint candies there's lemon juice...But this does work when OTC's just aren't easing a cough.

My dad made this when I was growing up. It did work and tasted good, much better than those store bought cough syrups! I think my brothers faked their coughs a lot!

When I was in my teens, my mom would fill a whiskey miniature with 1/2 whiskey, 1/2 honey, and I kept that under my pillow to take a swig during the night, whenever coughing awakened me !! When she told the doc about this, he LAUGHED and said, "That has to be the happiest cough in the house !". But as I recall, it WORKED !

My father-in-law makes this when we get sick, the only thing missing is lemon juice, I guess it's approx. 2 tbl. spoons, but it does work well and I prefer to use something homemade.

When I was little my gram used to give me 1 T. of whiskey with sugar, honey and lemon. It sure cut the cough back in those days a lot more than most of the cough syrups nowadays do! Thanks so much for sharing this old fashioned recipe with us Amy... In loving memory!

Well either this worked, or I didn't care anymore after drinking it! ha! I didn't use the extra sugar, thought the peppermints were sweet enough, kinda burned a little going down, but I am not a whiskey drinker. Thanx for sharing.

This seems to be an excellent cure all; and my baba thought "brandy" was the ticket, HA!! The peppermints add just enough "medicine" to the mix and the whiskie helps knock the edge off whatever ails: so, one can really "thank" all the well-intentioned visiters. It even works when you only wish you were sick. I'll make it again, and again, and again. And my hubby, well, he'll thank me!
