Don't let this recipe fool you. It is light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Awesome with Preacher's Chocolate Cake! Cooking/Prep time does not include cooling time.
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 2⁄3 cup milk
- 1⁄2 cup Crisco
- 1⁄2 cup butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- Cook milk and flour until thick and let cool (be sure to have paste cool completely).
- Beat shortening and butter 4 minutes till light and fluffy.
- Add sugar, beat another 4 minutes.
- Add cold paste and vanilla, beat another 4 minutes.
- Beating makes this frosting.
This is one of my favorite frostings, though the name is mis-leading a bit. I do find if i blend the sugar with the roux while it is still hot, I get a better texture - it "softens" the sugar and I never have a problem with the end product being a little gritty.
I really wanted to like this but it didn't work for me. I didn't like the consistency with the granulated sugar & the flour/milk part wasn't smooth it left little pieces in the frosting. Probably won't try again.
if i could give this more than five stars i would! I usually like the sweet of frosting but this was GREAT on chocolate cupcakes! the only thing i'd warn ppl is to watch the milk-flour mixture....i walked away from mine for a minute and it got a bit more globby then paste like... I started over though and it exceeded my expectations, very whipped and worth the time! Thanks!!!!
