This was so easy to do! was a huge hit with my family. I do highly reccomend you do almost 2x asmuch of the red as you do the purple. mine was more evenly colored than pic as I alloted a little less fo reach colour as I worked inward. I found 1 box of cake mix was enough for two 9" layers.
Great directions!! I made this recipe using a homemade cake batter, but following the instructions otherwise, and was very happy with the results! The kids really enjoyed it!
This was surprisingly so easy!! I used Betty Crocker Super Moist French Vanilla mix, and substituted about 2/3 of the oil for applesauce (I do this in almost every recipe - healthier, and I think it makes an even more moist cake!). I used almost 2x as much red as the purple and reduced the amount of batter just a bit by each color as I went through the rainbow. It was a nice surprise for my stepdaughter's 6th birthday. Thanks so much for posting!!
Excellent recipe for the requested rainbow cake by my 16 yr. old grandson. He waited the whole day in anticipation and was not let down. So moist and light and colours were so vibrant. I have posted photos thank you very much Culinary Explorer.
I made this cake tonight for the first time. I used 3 nine inch cake pans and 2 cake mixes! It was really easy to make and it turned out awesome! I used chocolate frosting instead of white though and it was very yummy!!! And I added sprinkles on top!
My son requested a rainbow cake for his 6th birthday. I was all set to do this Martha Stewart 6-layer rainbow cake, but when it was 9 o'clock before I got the kids to bed I thought, "oh no! I only have 2 cake pans! This is going to take all night!" I then thought there *has* to be something simpler and just as fabulous on Recipezaar. This recipe is awesome!!! Thank you for posting it and thank you to the reviewer who said to make twice as much red batter as purple. My cakes came out just perfect. Our guests were so impressed! And my son was like, "Wow! Rainbow Cake!" :) Thank you! Thank you!
What Fun! I made this for my nephew's birthday, using white icing and rainbow sprinkles on top. The boys thought the "rainbow" meant the sprinkles on top, and boy were they surprised to see the cake was rainbow colors. I used too much batter for the last color (purple), causing a big purple section in the center.
I havent actually tasted this myself. Came across it when searching for a cake recipe to make for the cake walk at the elementary school carnival. Thought it was a wonderful idea for kids!
