  1. delicious! - we couldn't stop eating it. I only gave it 4 stars because I didn't follow the recipe exactly but I worked with what I had on hand. I used 2 garlic, 2 celery, 2 carrot, a mix of onion & leek to make 2 cups, 1/2 tsp mustard seed & no potato, bay leaf & a small piece of kombu, salt & pepper. I sauteed the veggies then added the dry split peas (2 1/2 cups) - didn't want to deal w/ cleaning 2 pots. At the end I took a tip from "101cookbooks" split pea recipe. I added lemon juice from about a 1/2 of a lemon (to taste) & that really punched up the flavors. Then to each bowl I sprinkled on some smoked paprika which gave it that wonderful smokey flavor. This was a huge hit among non- veggies!

  2. Love this soup. I made it vegetarian and left out the vinegar. For those of you that want the flavor of ham but want to keep it vegetarian just use liquid smoke. I used a splash of Wright’s All Natural Hickory Seasoning (liquid smoke) and it came out great. NOTE: liquid smoke is concentrated so a little goes a long way.

  3. I have been using this recipe from the moosewood cookbook for many years. I love it. I no longer eat any pork products but I do put some liquid smoke or smoked paprika in there to give it that smoky taste.

  4. Absolutely delicious! Added an additional 2 cups of boiling water with the vegetables (NOT sauteed) and added a drizzle of balsamic vinegar to my individual bowl. Am sharing this recipe with soup loving friends and family!

Tweaks

  1. Anytime a vegetarian recipe requires a smoky flavor as from ham or bacon, I always add chipotle in adobo. Esta muy sabroso!

  2. I added some fresh zucchinni squash & left over cooked rottini noodles with side dish of garlic bread. It was our dinner. Hubby loved it. Great recipe & fun to experiment with different ingredients.

  3. Love the old Bay seasoning idea! Plus, I added a parsnip, turnip & rutabaga, extra water & 2 additional cups of split peas...both green & yellow....lots of pepper too. Turned out absolutely delicious!!

  4. I love split pea soup and this one was so good! Instead of the water I used vegetable broth, two medium potatoes, and about 1 1/2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. Also sauteed the vegetables before adding them to the soup but did not add the optional toppings before serving. I did add a little more vegetable broth while the soup was simmering to thin it out. DH doesnt care for split pea soup so I did not have to share and enjoyed the leftovers over the next couple days. Made and reviewed for KK's Recipe Tag game.

  5. Great soup! I have made this a number of times now. I always add extra virgin olive oil as I am surprised that there is no fat added to this soup. I use water and a tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning in place of the salt. DH adds some cubes of ham or bacon bits to his bowl. He and vegetarian DD both love this soup. Thanks for posting!
