directions

  • In a large, lightly oiled pot steam fry the onion until it begins to soften [that means cook it in a bit of water] Add flour and stir around completely.
  • Add the remaining ingredients, mix well, bring to boil. Cover and simmer on low for 30 minutes or until vegetables are done.
  • Taste and season.
  • Note: The turnips should be large dice. The carrots round sliced. You may use other yeast extract than marmite.
  • Also look in speciality or finer food stores for the Marmite. It is a British product. I find mine in Wegmans in PA/NY.

  1. Really looking forward to trying this one out on my Vegitarian Au Pair. I'm Irish and regularily make stews very similar to this one, normally with beef though. Little suggestion serve with mashed potato and/or add chunks of potato to the stew.

  2. Made this for St Paddy’s Day .. served it with dumplings, Champ and the not so Irish vegetarian chorizo sausages ... really enjoyed it

  3. Delicious comfort food! A great idea for a bunch of root vegetables that I never know what to do with. Don't let the 1-star review fool you; that was merely a complaint about beer which is not actually an ingredient in the recipe. However, beer sounded like a good idea to me so I threw in a Sam Adams and it turned out really yummy.

  4. Fantastic recipe. I omitted the TVP, and added a few extra mushrooms. I skipped the root veggies and used 2 cups of fingering potatoes. I could have added an extra 1/2 cup of red lentils...regardless it was great!

  5. I took this to a Lenten potluck dinner. It was delicious and I received many compliments. Once you get the ingredients together, it's very easy to make. I found the split red lentils in a natural foods grocery store and I used nutritional yeast flakes instead of the marmite. Also used textured nutritional flakes made from soy which worked fine. I made it on the stove in a pot and then transferred it to a crock pot that I took to church. I will definitely make this again, it's a pleasant and tasty change from my typical Lenten chili.

Tweaks

  1. I love love love this stew! It tasted like a bougie Dinty Moore. I put in: Both carrots and parsnips. Also added cup of yellow potatoes (chopped with skins on). Used low sodium soy sauce and only 2 bouillon cubes to lower the sodium content. Used vegemite as I couldn’t find marmite. Doubled the dried herbs. Used Gardein Beefless tips. Added 8 ounces Guinness.

  3. Very good... I used a can of kidney beans instead of the TVP chunks and doubled the herbs ... It could take various combos and amounts of veggies

  4. Just made this tonight in prep for tomorrow and it turned out very tasty! Think it'll be even better reheated. My only substitute was using equal amounts of nutritional yeast instead of marmite, and cubed tempeh instead of TVP. I also added in a bottle of Guinness (to my doubled recipe). The veggie bouillon I used is Rapunzel's no salt. I added only 1 cube per the recipe's 3 cubes, but generous on the other dried herbs. While red lentils may not be traditional, you can't even tell they are there. Seemed to add thickness and texture. I've never had true Irish stew, but this is hearty and wonderful vegetarian stew!

  5. OMIGOSH!!!!! Yah, this is phenomenal! Even my carnivorous coworkers loved it. (I heard a lot of "tastes like chicken" about the TVP). I used frozen pearl onions instead of dicing, frozen sliced carrots, and I threw it all in the crockpot on HIGH for 4-5 hours. It was a HUGE hit!! Keep in mind, it will be salty because of the bouillon, marmite, and Braggs, but that's part of what makes it taste like real Irish stew. (Might try nutritional yeast instead of marmite next time - will thicken as well.) Also, I used more Guinness. Can't go wrong with that! ;o)

I WILL NOT say they are Vegetarian or Vegan any longer due to the database changes. I DO NOT WISH YOU TO RECOMMEND THEM. Consider them as faulty. It's your own fault if you trust them. Don't bother to review. Don't ask me a question. I won't answer. I'm not here anymore. I will NOT warrent any recipe on this site put up by me as correct due to Scripps problems. IF they claim to have fixed it, I still do not warrent any recipe as correct except the ones that I put up personally on the tripod site so use any recipe posted under my name at your own risk. Basic? Lots of luck. Now the ones at chef.philocrates.tripod.com [see De Gustibus Veg*n in link on top], yeah, I will take responsiblity for all of them and the ingredients. I put them up and any errors are all mine. No the door didn't hit me on the ### but the skid marks in the parking lot are mine.
