Questions & Replies

  1. Also, you add the extra 4 cups of water in addition to the water that is added to 1/2" above the beans?

  1. I'm not going to rate this (so it won't affect your average rating) because I tried this against my better judgment. As so often happens with baked bean recipes, I found this to be way, way too sweet for my taste, even though I didn't add the syrup. Even adding more onion, some turkey bacon, and some cider vinegar didn't remove enough of the sweetness so I could enjoy it. This isn't a criticism of the recipe itself, it's more a warning for those who are like me and don't care for so much sweet.

  2. I took Okra4540's advice re: the sweetness problem & doctored the recipe up a bit. I give it 4 stars because of the heavy load of different sweeteners the recipe calls for--however, my doctored up version was delicious! I used all the same ingredients, but I used equal amounts of the sweet things (molasses, brown sugar, maple syrup, & ketchup). For the number of servings in the original recipe, I would use 1/4 c of all the sweeteners. I cut the recipe in 1/2, so I only used 2 TBSP of each (& then 1/2 the amount of the rest of the ingredients). Also, as I was doing this the day of--not the night before, I made my beans on the stove & then put it all together & baked it for 1/2 hour. I used about 1 cup of the water reserved from preparing the beans & also 1 TBSP of oil to help it all congeal in the oven. This all sounds like a whole different recipe--but it is really the same one & less sweet. The only other modification I made was that I used Smoked Paprika, & it added to the flavor!

  4. These Baked Beans are the best. Our family eats meat very rarely and now that summer is here we were looking for a "pork n bean" recipe without bacon. This is it. We made this for my in laws who own a cattle, and pig farm and eat meat with every meal, they loved it and asked for the recipe. We have used canned beans (great northern and pinto) to make this when we were in a hurry and it turned out fabulous.

  5. I had trouble getting the dry northern beans to cook so I use navy beans; and I found that one drop of liquid smoke was enough. So, my main reason for leaving a review is to let you know I have been using this recipe for a long time; I even included my adaption of it at my restaurant and my customers love it. There is no better, I swear, and when I get a picture of them I will definitely post it. We soak the beans overnight, start the batch the next morning, and they are ready the next morning. They are perfect beans. And easy too!
