Vegan Dlt (Dulse, Lettuce, and Tomato) Sandwiches

Dulse is a delicious and very nutritious sea vegetable. Its salty flavor and crispy texture make it an excellent substitute for bacon in this sandwich with much less sodium and fat than the "real" thing.

  1. Dry fry the dulse in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes, until the leaves turn greenish (black=burnt). Let cool.
  2. Meanwhile, toast bread (if desired) and slice tomato. Spread bread with vegenaise. Top with dulse, lettuce, and tomato. If desired, season with salt and pepper.

Instead of using mayo, although the wasabi mayo would have been great, I spread avocado on the sandwhich. Not only does it taste great, it helps keep the dulse from sliding out of the bread.

Delicious! I was truly surprised how much I would enjoy the dulse in this sandwich! It really reminded me of veggie bacon and had that nice little crunch from toasting it! I enjooyed with a slice of tomato and iceberg lettuce on toasted whole wheat bread. Thanks! Made for the Vegetarian Swap March 2010.
