Uncle Bill's Hot Rum Toddy

"I have been making this Rum Toddy for many years. This is good on cold days, a cold or a sore throat. I am not suggesting it is a cure, but it is tasty."

 1. I’m drinking mine now. It is delicious! I followed directions precisely with the exception of the Nutmeg, which I did not have on hand so I grated fresh Ginger root (great for cough/sore throat). I would say I grated the root with 4 swipes and that’s what I put in the cup. I boiled my water in a pot and added water to cup filled with the ingredients. I then poured the liquid into a second cup, through a strainer to get the lemon seeds and fresh Ginger Root out. I think it was perfect and I am big on sweets and was so sure I would need to add honey but I didn’t, it was just fine. Thanks Uncle Bill!!

 2. I've tried several hot toddy recipes over the past two decades (yes, I am over 38). Had an uncomfortable chest cold with aggravating 'cough' which Robitussin TM seemed to barely manage.

Was wallowing in self-pity watching some pointless program when I had an inspiration. "What inspiration?" you may ask...

I googled "Hot Rum Toddy" as I was in Cuba earlier this year and was not in mood for a 'Cuba Libre'. Found Uncle Bill's Hot rum toddy concoction. Although I had no nutmeg, I did have the fresh lemon, great Canadian organic honey, of course the essential CUBAN dark rum, and whatever else his recipe prescribed.

One drink later, feeling fine and gotta' admit, I lessened the honey amount (too sweet for me, used teasppons) and on a scale of 1-5, this is easily a 4.5

Why so high? If it wasn't good I wouldn't have taken the time to post this comment!

THANKS UNCLE BILL, you ROCK!!!

(Qiviuq leaves post to make round #2...)

 3. This was excellent! I added the juice of 1/2 a freshly squeezed lemon instead of the Lemon rind. I also added some real butter to stir in while I drank it. Drink it slowly if you are not used to alcohol as 3 ounces to me was a lot. Thank you for the great recipe!!!

 4. Splendid use of dark rum and lemon. Woke with a sore throat and nowhere to go, so why not start the day with this baby!? Thanks!

 5. This was excellent!! I didn't have rum on hand, so I substituted with crown royal maple whiskey.. and it was delicious!!! My hubby had to crawl to bed after this one and didn't seem to notice his flu anymore..hahaha :)

Tweaks

 1. I’m not a rum drinker so I substituted bourbon and we were out of honey so we used maple syrup. My cough hasn’t subsided but it was delish!

 2. Substituted Nutmeg with freshly grated Ginger Root.

 3. left out the nutmeg, used orange blossom honey
