I have tried many recipes for homemade meatless burgers.....I hate paying the high prices in the stores, and I like knowing exactly what is in my food. These were the absolute BEST so far!!! I added a few chopped mushrooms with the vegetables and left out the carrot because I didn't have any. I also added a few drops of liquid smoke just for a bit more flavor. These were a HUGE success!!!! Even my kids, who spurn anything vegetarian, really liked them!!! :) It doesn't get much better than that!! :)
I'm pretty picky when it comes to veggie burgers (mock meats in general) I really liked these! I've made other tvp burgers that weren't near this good. The texture is better and they stayed together! I like this spice combo, but I think it would be better with mushrooms and caramelized onions, or even gravy! Next time I use this for "hamburgers" I'll change up the spice mixture a bit ( possabilities are endless, but keep the onion/celery!). These would also be great "chicken" patties with the right seasonings (vegan chicken bullion perhaps?) That being said I did make a few changes (it's in my nature) I threw in a couple TBSPs of wheat gluten (which gave a little more "bite"), a hand full of shredded cheese, little extra ketchup, some spicy mustard and black pepper! Yes, this really works! I served the burgers up for my family, and they all said how much they enjoyed them, and that I must make them again. They have a great texture and taste. I substituted some tomato puree and a teaspoon of honey instead of the ketchup. because i don't eat much stuff with sugar in it, and also put in a teaspoon of cumin and a bit of chilli powder. i also found that it needed just a touch more flour than stated in the recipe.
I loved these burgers. I added a few teaspoons of tomato paste and instead of flour I mixed in vital wheat gluten refrigerated the mixture for an hour and had no problem keeping them together. They were very tasty andI Just saute them in some evoo and enjoy.
It's not a veggie burger, Worcestershire sauce ha a non-veggie ingredient- anchovies. So, I'm not going to be eating this anytime soon.
The flavor in the burgers is fine, but like many veggie burger recipes they don't hold together very well.
This was my first time using TVP. I can't believe how easy and good this recipe is. I added some liquid smoke and a little extra flour. Excellent!
It worked really well! I added in BBQ sauce in lieu of ketchup, plus cumin and chili powder. The burgers are kind of small, though, so I would reduce the number of patties called for and make them larger.
