Turnips Fried With Bacon

Always in search of low carb side dishes, I threw this together one night for dinner. Also works well for breakfast with eggs and bacon or sausage or ham.

My cousin gave us a bunch of turnips from a field he was going to plow up. Although I have never been a fan of turnips, I am frugal, and looked for simple recipes for them, hoping my taste had changed a little toward turnips since the childhood trauma of having to eat them. Since I had the simple ingredients for this recipe, I decided to make it right away to see if I could eat it. YES! I could! My husband, who is also not a turnip fan, has not come in for lunch yet, but but I am hopeful that when he tries this, he will be as happy with this delicious dish as I am! THANKS, Sooz!

Ingredients Nutrition

  • 4 turnips, medium sized cubed
  • 4 slices bacon, diced
  • 1 tablespoon onion, chopped (to taste)
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Place cubed turnips in a covered microwave-proof dish along with 1 tablespoons of water. Microwave on high for 7 minutes. Remove and drain well.
  2. In a non-stick skillet on medium high heat, cook the bacon until they just begin to turn brown.
  3. Add onion and saute until onion becomes translucent.
  4. Stir in turnips and saute for another 5 - 7 minutes or until the turnps are cripsy and a bit brown on the outside.
