This is a wonderful way to serve turnip. Even those who normally dislike turnips will not turn up their noses.
- 4 turnips, peeled and diced (about 2 lbs)
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1⁄4 cup soda cracker, crushed
- 2⁄3 cup evaporated milk
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 dash pepper
- 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
- 1⁄8 teaspoon allspice
- In uncovered saucepan, cook turnips in boiling water until tender.
- Drain well.
- Mash if necessary and drain.
- Blend in remaining ingredients.
- Pour into greased Crock Pot.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 2-3 hours. For low setting 4-6 hours.
I am so disappointed.... I think there is a typo in the recipe.... 1 Tablespoon of salt is WAY too much.... especially with all that cheese. I made it exactly as written despite my better judgement (Maybe that much salt will mellow the bitterness in the turnips as it slow cooks?) but NOOOOO don't do it. I think it must be 1 tsp. I will try it again because besides that I think it would have been good and my house smelled great with the allspice in there but alas... I had to throw away the season's last fresh turnips. maybe next year....
I won't rate it because maybe having it on warm for several hours after cooking caused it to be sour and bitter. However, when I did a pre-crock pot taste of it, it tasted pretty yummy. Was my first time to try turnips so if I make again...I'll just eat it as is and not put in the crock pot.
This was very good and gave me more stove top room for the rest of the meal. I left out the allspice, just because I have never had allspice in turnip before. I will try it next time when I am not serving to company, just to see if I will add it in the future. Yes I will make this again, because it tastes good and once made I can forget about it.
